Jean hurriedly turned away, her chin dipping downward as if she wanted nothing more than to avoid this conversation. "This has nothing to do with you, so stop asking!"
Even though she said that, she was thrilled on the inside. That damned Adam had seized every opportunity to humiliate her while Brad was away from Janctera City. Now that Brad was back, it was time for her to settle the score.
Wasn't Adam determined to bring Brad back into the family fold? Jean would make sure that didn't happen. After all, Nadine Scott was no match for her.
Presently, Jean looked as though she had been gravely wronged. Brad had once promised her that he would take care of her for life, whether in wealth or poverty, in sickness or in health.
Back then, when he had a heart attack and his life hung by a thread, Jean was diagnosed with kidney disease. Not wanting to be a burden to him, she went abroad. But now that he had the means to take care of and cherish her, there was no way he would stand by and watch her suffer.
Jean couldn't stop her tears from falling, her teeth sinking into her lower lip. "Please, just drop it, okay?"
Her reluctance to speak only fueled his suspicion that his grandfather was up to no good. To avoid damaging his relationship with his grandfather, Jean was willing to suffer in silence. This made his heart ache more for her, and he didn't even have the heart to question her.
Brad pulled her into his arms, gently patting her back as he comforted her. "If you don't want to talk about it, you don't have to. I'll go and get the answers from Grandpa myself!"
