Just at this moment…
Knock, knock, knock... The urgent knocking on the door shattered the tender moment between them.
“Ms. Downey, Lillian is awake. How are we going to settle this? The police have arrived.”
Hayden suddenly came to her senses, pushed Joseph off, and quickly sat up.
Knock, knock, knock…
“Ms. Downey, are you there?” Jeff sounded doubtful as he knocked on the door.
Hayden took a deep breath and forced herself to brace up, “I’m here. I didn’t hear you earlier. I’m busy with something and will be there in five minutes. You go ahead first.”
“What’s wrong with you? Do you need any help?”
Hayden was shocked to hear this and quickly replied, “No, I… I’m changing. My clothes were soiled after saving the person just now.”
Hayden heaved a sigh of relief after she managed to convince Jeff to leave. She turned around and saw Joseph looking sheepishly at her as he said, “You are great at lying.”
Hayden blushed immediately and glared at him, “All because of you.”
“Actually your lie wasn’t well thought out.” Joseph crossed his arms and teased, “So many people saw me carry you in here. Don’t you think that your assistant would expect that I’m here?”
Hayden’s expression changed immediately on hearing this and remained speechless for a moment. Didn’t she just shoot herself in the foot?
“You already knew that this would happen?” Hayden ground her teeth and said, “You did this on purpose.”
“Yes, I did.” Joseph said calmly, “An eye for an eye.”
Hayden frowned and asked, “What for? Have I offended you?”
Joseph looked deeply into her and reminded her, “You have forgotten what we agreed at the ancient city?”
Hayden came to her senses and her face started to burn, “I was…”
She simply couldn’t find the words and then said, “So because of that you held a grudge against me until today. You kept making things difficult for me and today you intentionally did that in front of so many people…”
Joseph reacted and said, “What do you mean that I made things difficult for you because of that matter?”
“Then what else could it be?” Hayden was now upset and softly said, “You picked on me during the meeting in front of so many people. You were taking revenge for your own private reasons”
“What did you say?”
“Nothing.” Hayden avoided his eyes and shifted to the side.
Joseph looked at her and then at the large bouquet of roses as his cheerful mood dissipated and he said coldly, “The scent of the flowers is too strong. Next time don’t put them in the office. It’s so tacky.”
