“Before questioning me, think about how you talk to me first.”
Hayden was aggrieved as she thought about it, and she poured out all the things that had happened over this period, “Of course you think that I should put Noah first, but both Noah and Stella are equally important to me. Since you don’t believe me nor agree with it, then I really wish to know what position that you want me to put Stella in? Have you really ever treated Stella as your family, as your daughter?”
Joseph was speechless.
“And also your childhood sweetheart, Addison Sanchez, Vivian. Well, you said that she was just your sister and I believed you. But do you know that there were many gossips and rumours about it? Even your cousin knew that you don’t like me. If Vivian is your fiancée, then who am I? A secret lover that you just paid for?”
Hayden was exhausted hissing, and she said viciously, “I’m not that cheap!”
She spoke it all in one sitting, staring at Joseph for a while. She then lowered her head with red eyes, seemingly aggrieved.
“Let go of me.” Her voice was dull as she whimpered.
Joseph was clutching Hayden’s hands with great force, and she couldn’t shake it off.
After a long time, he said hoarsely, “I’m sorry about the kids. I was wrong. But I didn’t mean to not consider your situation and mood. Just that… that day, I was…”
He spoke incoherently.
People would speak incoherently in the heat of anger.
How could he unreasonably ask a mother to give up her own child and take care of other’s child wholeheartedly? Just when Noah Beckham had the accident, he was in a bad mood and being absurd.
“I’m sorry.”
He rarely justified himself but just apologised even if he wanted to say something. Others might hear it being lightly, but to him, it was heavy.
He figured out that his dignity, as well as those trivialities in their life, was just no big deal. People would only then find out what really mattered when they were in mortal danger.
“I apologize for all the things that I’ve done, and also for all the words I’ve said that hurt you. I’m sorry, Hayden. I’ve been trying to use a less pretentious way to express my feelings for you. But in the end, I found that nothing carries more weight than saying loving you.”
Hayden was speechless.
“Hayden, I love you.”
The night breezes blew, and Hayden was embraced in a warm hug. She was powerless to struggle, and tears were running down her cheeks as she cried even louder.
She could even hear her own dull voice hissing, “You bastard.”
But in the end, she snuggled into his arms, feeling aggrieved.
There wouldn’t be so many misunderstandings if people could be honest with each other. People would only then know what you were trying to do until you had made the first move. No matter how it felt inside, nothing was better than making a confession.
Hayden sneezed as she got back to the car.
Joseph turned off the air conditioner and wrapped his jacket around her, feeling worried.
“Have some tea.”
“Thanks.”
Hayden sniffed as she received the cup of tea.
None of them mentioned the incident just now after they had calmed down.
It was a shame for two adults blubbering about a trifle on the road at night!
After a while, Joseph broke the silence, “About the fire, we have figured it out before you resigned. It was Baron who set the fire. And Noah had stumbled into the cold storage by that time. Although Baron didn’t admit it, Stella was probably dazed by him at that time. But I didn’t have the chance to tell you about this.”
