“Is Hayden’s family here?”
The nurse’s voice was echoing in the hallway. For the first time in his life, Joseph felt like that his feet were tied down by rocks and he can’t even move.
He came to himself in a while, “Here. I’m.”
Pushing the people away, Joseph said in a trembling voice, “I’m.”
Holding the Operation Consent Form, the nurse looked at Joseph blankly as she had been seeing this kind of scene every day.
“The patient’s left chest cavity was punctured by a steel bar and it was near the heart, so the risk of surgery is pretty high. The doctor is performing an emergency operation, but you have to sign here first.”
It seemed like there was a bomb had blown off right in Joseph’s head and he can’t possibly picture what it was like to have a steel bar in one’s chest. He just froze.
“Sir... sir, are you okay?”
Joseph signed his name mechanically and felt that everything around him had all disappeared. He started at the operation room door the whole time.
Ten minutes after the nurse entered the operation room, there was noises coming from the hallway.
Dante, Freddie and Cleveland were all here.
“How is my sister?” Freddie asked frantically.
Biting his lips tightly, Joseph’s eyebrows were literally shaking. He stood there like a statue and repeated the nurse’s words in a while.
“What happened?” Freddie suddenly grasped Joseph’s collar and yelled with his eyes all red.
“Joseph, is this the way you are looking after my sister?”
“Maybe it’s not that bad.” Holding Freddie, Cleveland looked at the operation hours and said worryingly, “We haven’t known the result yet. The doctor is performing the operation now, so don’t panic.”
But Freddie seemed like he didn’t hear Cleveland’s words and clutched at Joseph’s collar tightly, “Joseph, remember how did you promise me back then? She is my sister!”
Joseph slowly looked up and met Freddie’s eyes. His eyes were all red and were seeming to be holding back pains. He didn’t even want to speak if Freddie was not acting up.
“For you, she is your sister. But for me, she is my life. “
All people paused.
Pulling back Freddie’s hands, Cleveland consoled, “Hayden is having the operation now. Let’s just wait and see the result.”
The light in the operation room was turned off in about half of an hour and the doctor in charge stepped out of the room first. Looking at all the people, he took off the mask and made a deep bow, “I’m sorry, we’ve done our best.”
Freddie can barely stand straight and would have fallen to the ground if it was not for Cleveland.
The operation bed was wheeled out behind the doctor in charge. Pinching the corner of the white sheet, Freddie just can’t bring himself to lift it up. Then he just started crying uncontrollably.
Dante’s eyes also got red and even the eyes of once indifferent Cleveland were trembling.
Joseph just stood there mechanically and was like an overwhelmed child. Unlike Freddie, he can’t even bring himself to the operation bed and refused to believe who was under that white blanket.
He regretted that he had that quarrel with her this morning and didn’t express his deep love for her before it was too late.
“How come that you are all here?”
Looking at the saddened five men in the hospital, Anna asked in bewilderment while holding two take-away packages in the hall way.
“What happened?”
Dante was the one who was standing the nearest to her. He frowned and said in a hoarse voice, “Stop asking. She didn’t make it.”
