Although Wendy did not finish her sentence, Charles still knew what she was trying to say. She was worried that this would be their last chance Charles could see his grandmother.
After all, Charles' grandmother, Charlotte, was already eighty years old, and it was hard to tell if she would even survive such a major operation.
Charles returned to his room. "Don't worry, Mom. I'll be back soon. Grandma will be okay!"
"You are right, Charles. Grandma will be fine."
Charles got off the phone and booked the earliest flight he could get to San Angelino. He quickly left after grabbing just his essentials: his ID, wallet, passport, and some important documents. He would return to San Angelino just to see his grandmother; if she were fine, he would return the next morning.
If she did not make it… he would tell Naomi of the situation the next morning.
Charles left the hotel and hailed a taxi to the airport. "Driver, to the airport, and make it as fast as you can, please."
"Yes, sir."
The driver stepped on the gas and sped onto the freeway.
Charles watched the hotel disappear in the rearview mirror and took out his phone. He wanted to send Naomi a message to tell her that he needed to step away for a bit.
However, after some hesitation, he put down his phone again.
He would tell her once he arrived in San Angelino.
He turned to gaze out the window at the passing city lights. He clenched his fist as a solemn look crossed his face.
Meanwhile, Naomi returned to her room and texted Charles as soon as she settled in.
