Before he could even finish his sentence, Naomi's phone rang.
Charles paused.
Naomi took her phone out of her pocket and glanced at it. It was a number she did not recognize, but a local one. She hesitated for a moment, then picked up. "Hello?"
"Is this Ms. Naomi Goodwin?"
"Yes, speaking. You are…"
"I'm a police officer from the Le Soleil Police Department. You came to us this evening to report a case of assault by Ms. Olivia Carver. Is that correct?"
Naomi froze, then replied, "Yes, I did. Are you calling about the verdict?"
Charles did not utter another word but stood still next to Naomi, listening to her conversation. His gaze landed on her face when he heard her.
She had a solemn look on her face, and the smile had disappeared, exactly like how she was when making the police report. Therefore, Charles could easily guess who it was on the other end of the line.
"Well, Ms. Carver's lawyer stopped by and offered to settle this dispute outside of court. He's offering to pay a penalty, but Ms. Carver won't be pleading guilty. Can you come by to discuss this with Ms. Carver and her lawyer? I think it's best if you come to an agreement about this face-to-face."
Naomi was not at all surprised by this. "How about tomorrow at noon?"
"That's fine."
"Alright then. I'll stop by tomorrow."
