"Really?" Shangguan Xi asked with her face flushed.
"Yes, really," Zuo Ling nodded.
About an hour later, it was finally time to eat.
The dishes were pretty good, consisting of five dishes and one soup, two meat and three vegetarian, but it was much worse compared to the last time Zuo Ling had visited the Ni Family.
But Shangguan Xi could understand, after all, the Zuo Family’s conditions were no match for theirs.
Zuo father warmly urged Shangguan Xi to sit down and eat, "Xiaoxi, don’t be polite, just treat this as your own home."
"Thank you, uncle. Auntie, you’ve worked hard."
Zuo mother couldn’t be bothered to pay attention to Shangguan Xi.
Her son wasn’t without prospects for a wife; she didn’t feel the need to please Shangguan Xi.
Shangguan Xi assumed Zuo mother was just eccentric and didn’t mind.
After dinner, Zuo Ling couldn’t wait to take Shangguan Xi back.
Zuo mother took the gift Shangguan Xi had brought, "Xiaoxi, you’re too polite bringing such expensive gifts to just visit. Please take them back."
Zuo mother deliberately emphasized the word ’expensive’.
Who would crave such trivial items?
Shangguan Xi didn’t catch the implied meaning from Zuo mother and smiled, "It’s nothing expensive, just some fruit. You don’t have to be so polite."
"You take them back," continued Zuo mother, "take them back for the elders at home to enjoy. It must have been a long time since you’ve had meat in the village, right?"
"Ah?" Shangguan Xi was stunned.
Zuo Ling quickly took the items from Zuo mother’s hands, smiling, "Mom, why be so formal with Xiaoxi? Since she specifically bought them to show her respect, you should just accept them."
Zuo mother looked at Zuo Ling with a face full of disappointment.
That Shangguan Xi, with a poor family background, couldn’t even bear sons.
She wondered what Zuo Ling saw in her!
