Ni Yang smiled and said, "Do you miss me that much?"
"Miss you? Of course, I miss you! I even dream about you!" Zhang Qiuying flattered endlessly, then turned to Li Huilan, "Huilan, do you miss me and Yangyang?"
Li Huilan answered somewhat shyly, "I, I do miss you too! Oh, I’ve brought our local specialty for you, the aromatic pig ham!"
As she spoke, Li Huilan took out a piece of yellow-cured ham from her parcel.
Zhang Qiuying looked puzzled, "We don’t have a pot in our dorm, and you brought such a big piece of meat; how are we supposed to eat it?"
Li Huilan pulled out a knife and cut a piece of ham for Zhang Qiuying, "This is eaten raw, try it."
Raw meat?
Zhang Qiuying frowned slightly; she really dared not eat it!
In their hometown, there was a saying that eating raw pork could cause mad pig disease!
Zhang Qiuying waved her hands repeatedly, "Huilan, stop joking! How can you eat raw meat? Aren’t you afraid of getting mad pig disease?"
Li Huilan smiled and said, "Mad pig disease? No way! Everyone eats it like this back home!"
Upon finishing her sentence, Li Huilan cut another piece of pork and handed it to Ni Yang, "Yangyang, you try."
Ni Yang accepted the slice of ham with a smile, "This ham tastes amazing when eaten raw!"
Aromatic pig ham is considered a luxury food in later years, with prices soaring into five digits per pound! The ham from the 1980s was all-natural and free from pollution, making it many times tastier than the exorbitantly priced hams of later years!
Seeing Ni Yang enjoying the ham so much, Zhang Qiuying couldn’t help but give her a thumbs up, "Yangyang, you’re something! Daring to eat raw meat!"
Ni Yang took another piece and then another, "This is truly a rarity; you can’t buy it even if you had the money, Qiuying. Not eating it is your loss."
Zhang Qiuying said, "I’m not eating, I’m not eating!"
After eating three slices of ham, Ni Yang sighed, "If only we had a glass of wine to go with it!"
It was already 1986, and everyone would be raving about the ’87 Lafite wine next year, so Ni Yang planned to buy a batch to store.
Zhang Qiuying laughed, "Yangyang, you really know how to enjoy life."
"Life is all about food and drink," Ni Yang spoke lightly.
Li Huilan looked up at Zhang Qiuying, "Qiuying, are you really not going to eat this ham?"
"Not eating, not eating," Zhang Qiuying shook her head like a drum.
Ni Yang shook her head, "Ah, some people just don’t appreciate good food!"
Li Huilan picked up the ham and placed it on Ni Yang’s desk, "Since Huilan can’t enjoy this, Yangyang, I’ll give this piece of ham to you. Take it home and let your family try it!"
Ni Yang was taken aback by Li Huilan’s generosity, "All for me? Huilan, aren’t you going to eat it yourself?"
Li Huilan said nonchalantly, "I’ve been eating it since I was a child, and I’m tired of it. Just take it, and don’t be polite."
Although the 1980s was a difficult time, there were still wealthy areas. Li Huilan, although born in a rural area, didn’t have it as hard as one might think; there was no shortage of meat.
However, a large piece of meat like this was still considered very precious for a rural household.
But precious as it was, it couldn’t compare to the value of friendship.
Li Huilan held these two roommates in high regard and was willing to share the best with them.
And Ni Yang was never stingy with them either.
"Huilan, then I won’t stand on ceremony!" Ni Yang knew how to conduct herself and was well aware of the subtleties of human relationships. If she were to refuse the ham today, it might make Li Huilan feel uneasy.
Sure enough, upon learning that Ni Yang had accepted the ham, Li Huilan was overjoyed, "Yangyang, if your family likes it, just tell me, and I’ll bring you some more next year!"
Ni Yang carefully packed the ham away, "Huilan, on behalf of my family, thank you."
After finishing packing up the ham, Ni Yang remembered that when she came to school, Ni Cuihua had picked out a big bag of things for her to bring to the dorm to share with her roommates, "I almost forgot! This is what my mom asked me to bring over! You guys go ahead and eat!"
Ni Yang had brought some cooked food, like sunflower seeds, dried fruit, and Braised Duck Feet and Duck Head...
Zhang Qiuying and Li Huilan enjoyed it immensely.
"My goodness! This is way too delicious!"
"Yangyang, where did your family buy this duck head?" Zhang Qiuying asked, nibbling on a duck head and speaking unclearly.
Ni Yang said, "This duck head was braised by my grandmother and my maternal grandmother. If you like it, I’ll bring some more next time."
"Sure, sure!" Zhang Qiuying was thrilled.
