"But you don't see me as a friend." This was the first time Yolanda had overtly expressed her aggression toward Bryce.
Initially, she was reluctant to confront him considering his bond with the original Yolanda.
But after several encounters, Yolanda realized that the gentle and kind Bryce in the original Yolanda's mind was nothing like the person standing before her.
Either Bryce was skilled at wearing a mask, or the original Yolanda had never truly understood him.
"At least I wouldn't use words like 'abandon yourself to vice' on my friends."
"Yolanda, I…" Bryce felt awkward, but he was unsure how to explain himself. "I spoke without thinking. It was just in the heat of the moment."
"The truth always comes out in the heat of the moment," Yolanda replied sternly. "In your heart, I am exactly the person you just described."
"I don't…" Bryce instinctively wanted to argue but found his words weak and unconvincing. "Could I really be thinking that way?"
He gazed blankly at Yolanda's back as she walked away. "No, it can't be true… I love you. How could I possibly look down on you?"
It seemed like something clicked in Bryce's mind. He hurried in the direction Yolanda had gone.
…
When Yolanda arrived at Willow Creek Clinic, it was just past lunchtime.
Baxter had been busy seeing patients. Upon seeing Yolanda, he asked her to cover for him with the patients in the back.
After sitting down, Yolanda glanced at the door.
She had sensed someone following her on her way there.
Bryce's tracking skills were amateurish. She could have easily shaken him off with a few detours, but she chose not to.
