Nathalie was taken aback. Had she really been ignoring him that much?
Lizzy couldn't help but chuckle, “You forgot. Nathan doesn’t drink, he doesn’t eat takeout, and he avoids anything heavily seasoned or pickled... yet when you’re busy, you’re all about the takeout? Do you realize how his eyes go red and teary every time he sees you eating takeout?”
Nathalie was lost for words. She had always thought of Nathan as just a kid, his worries nothing more than polite gestures. It was only now she realized he knew about her past life’s struggle with kidney disease. He spent every day silently stressed about her diet and lifestyle, trying to change her fate.
“He really does care,” she said, her voice catching with emotion.
At that moment, she understood her peaceful life was because someone was quietly bearing the burden for her.
Lizzy got more animated, “He also told you not to stay up late, but when haven’t you been burning the midnight oil? And he asked you not to get tangled up with Cameron and Greta, worried it’d bring you down and harm your health. But you’ve been blinded by hate, missing his concern…”
“Do you know how many times he’s drunk himself silly worrying about you? How many times his eyes have turned red? And how often he’s gone to church to pray for you?
“For all the love he has for you, I’m begging you to turn back, to see all the good in him. Stop getting involved with Cameron, and stop making him cry time and again.”
“Stop it. Lizzy, just stop,” Nathalie slumped into a chair.
She hadn’t realized how ungrateful she had been. She had such a decent guy by her side, yet she kept getting wrapped up with the wrong people.
Looking at Nathalie, who seemed as lost as a stray, Lizzy wiped her tears and sighed softly, “In my eyes, you’re the best person in this world. Nathan is also the best. Why can’t the best people be together? I just don’t get it.”
Nathalie weakly said, “Lizzy, let me be alone for a bit.”
Lizzy closed the door and quietly slipped away.
Nathalie covered her eyes, tears slipping through her fingers.
