Cameron: "..."
Caught off guard by the nanny's blunt honesty, Cameron didn't know how to respond.
"I'll get your pay to you as soon as I can."
The nanny replied, "It's not just the unpaid wages keeping us away from the Dawson Estate. It's your new wife—she's a nightmare. She treats us like we're invisible. Demands midnight snacks with water precisely at 104 degrees Fahrenheit, and expects us to jump at her every whim. If we're even a minute late, she curses our ancestors. Seriously, what were you thinking, choosing someone so insufferable?"
She clicked her tongue, continuing her rant, "The old Mrs. Dawson was so much better. She was warm, friendly, lively, and kind. She never raised her voice at us, and whenever any of us were in trouble, she'd go out of her way to help. If you let me go, I'll apply to work for her tomorrow..."
Cameron felt a wave of frustration stuck in his throat, unable to express or ignore it. He finally waved her away weakly.
The nanny, interrupted at the peak of her venting, left in a huff.
Cameron slumped into his chair, feeling drained.
His eyes inadvertently drifted back to his phone screen.
There was Nathalie, smiling with a knowing look that seemed to mock him.
Cameron recalled all the times he'd belittled Nathalie. He'd thought a girl like Nathalie, with her modest background, should feel honored to marry into his family and rise above her station. So he felt free to ignore her needs, give her the cold shoulder, and even arrogantly demand she make sacrifices like donating her organs.
"Heh," he chuckled bitterly at himself.
He suddenly realized what a jerk he'd been. What right did he have to treat Nellie like that?
Was it just because she loved him?
How foolish.
There's a saying, "What goes around comes around," and the good woman he didn't appreciate was naturally found by someone else.
The humble weed he trampled had grown unchecked, even overshadowing his own shine.
Her new husband not only had a higher status than Cameron but also loved and cherished her more, making Cameron look like a fool.
