Nathan stood silently for what seemed like forever, finally speaking with a heavy seriousness, "Just one."
Nathalie let out a big sigh of relief.
"Alright, I trust you."
As he helped her up, Nathan said, "You should lay off the booze. It’s not good for you."
Out of the blue, Nathalie hugged him tightly, overwhelmed with emotion. "Nathan, take care of yourself."
For once, Nathan didn’t say anything back.
A hush fell over them.
The air turned inexplicably somber.
Not too far away, a shadowy figure was lurking behind a column. Not wanting to alert Nathan, Nathalie subtly sent him off.
"Nathan, the bath's ready. Go enjoy it."
Once Nathan was gone, Nathalie marched straight to the column. Miranda was there, looking both embarrassed and panicked. "Nathalie, I..."
Nathalie hadn’t doubted her at first, but Miranda’s jittery vibe set off alarm bells. Nathalie had to ask, "What are you doing here at this hour?" She demanded, her face stern.
Miranda stumbled over her words, "I just couldn’t sleep. So I went for a walk..."
Nathalie pressed on, "Then why were you hiding?"
Miranda, never good at lying, stammered, "Well..."
Nathalie was furious, "Do you think I'm gullible? Or maybe you think I'm too soft? I took you in when you had nowhere else to go, and you have the gall to deceive me?"
Caught off guard, Miranda was flustered, "Nathalie, I didn’t mean any harm. It’s just... I’m worried about my daughter, Greta. She’s so young, stuck in a mental hospital, and not in good health. How is she supposed to get through life?"
