Outside the prison, Nathalie was waiting so long it felt like she was trying to watch paint dry. Officer Baldwin finally showed up, looking as if he had all the time in the world. "Ashley."

Nathalie walked up to him, her eyes landing on his empty hands. Her face wasn’t exactly thrilled, more like annoyed. She kicked herself for taking so long to figure out who he really was.

"Did he take the gifts?" she asked.

Officer Baldwin nodded. "At first, he didn’t want them, but then he changed his mind. He’s decided to keep them now."

Nathalie’s voice caught in her throat. "I knew it was him."

Officer Baldwin gave Nathalie a long look, unsure of what to say. His bosses wanted him to convince Inmate No. 13 to turn over a new leaf, but No. 13 didn’t care about life or freedom, living by his own rules. Officer Baldwin was stumped.

But when he learned Nathalie and No. 13 were siblings, and saw the bond and love they shared, he figured Nathalie might just be the ticket to reaching No. 13. Yet, he chose not to take advantage of her.

Nathalie, however, brought it up on her own. "Officer Baldwin, he's got a good heart; he's no villain. If there’s a chance to get his sentence reduced, I want to help."

Officer Baldwin was floored. It was like stumbling upon a solution without even trying.

He said, excitedly, "Ashley, honestly, we’re impressed by his genius. The higher-ups want to give him a chance to make up for his actions. But he seems to have lost all hope, and nothing I’ve said has managed to get through to him."

"And there’s more. He’s got this cutting-edge surveillance system that can track anyone anywhere with pinpoint accuracy. It’d be a huge help for us in solving cases. But he won’t share it. If he used it to help us, his sentence could be slashed..."

"And his artificial intelligence, it’s so sophisticated it’s almost indistinguishable from a real brain. If he shared that breakthrough, it could lead to an even bigger sentence reduction."

Nathalie noted everything down, and when Officer Baldwin finished, she simply said, "Some things you can nudge, and some things you just can’t. I won’t push him."

Officer Baldwin was stunned. It was like watching a parent spoil their kid. But Nathalie’s next words really threw him for a loop.
