Greta stood there, speechless, her emotions swirling like a storm as she locked eyes with Cameron.
"Cameron, are you seriously going to just stand by and let her strut her arrogance right under our noses? You used to never put up with even a smidge of disrespect from her—"
"That's enough." Cameron cut her off, his voice laced with frustration.
"Weren't we just as high and mighty towards her in the past? Why should we be the only ones allowed to act that way, and not her?"
Greta was left speechless again.
Cameron's moment of introspection and newfound empathy for Nathalie left Greta feeling unsettled.
"Cameron, you never used to think about her feelings like this."
Cameron gave her a cold stare. "Greta, I did a lot of irrational things because I loved you. Wrong is wrong. And you need to own up to your mistakes too..."
Greta's voice wavered, "I get it," though her heart was far from accepting it.
After Nathalie's family gathering wrapped up, she sank into a large bathtub. Her body floated freely like a fish, and her mind began to drift away.
Thinking about meeting the mysterious No. 13 tomorrow left her both excited and nervous. The visiting hours were short; how could she make the most of that time to convince him to work towards reducing his sentence?
Would he still be as receptive to her as he was when they were kids? Would he think she was being too pushy?
The next day, Nathalie was up at the crack of dawn. She made sure Lizzy picked out a classy and pricey black dress for her. The snug bodice and feathered, flowing skirt highlighted her slender yet curvy figure perfectly.
As she stood at the entrance, she immediately noticed the specially designed wheelchair in the center. Sitting upright in the chair was a man, his back exuding a noble elegance like a young lord.
His hands rested on the wheelchair’s armrests, long and pale, strikingly beautiful. It was hard to ignore the scar that snaked down from his sleeve, like a centipede.
Seeing that scar made Nathalie's heart ache, and tears fell uncontrollably down her face.
Even though he was so close, the path to him felt incredibly tough for Nathalie.
Her footsteps caught No. 13's attention, and his head moved slightly, like a puppet’s.
"You came?" he asked.
