"Sure, his IQ might be 180, which is decent, but he's still got a long way to go to catch up to me."
"He's all about applied physics, AI, chemistry, and bioengineering... His big achievements? Just a bunch of minor awards from national competitions. Unfortunately, his emotional intelligence is seriously lacking, and he tends to speak without thinking... I sometimes wonder if it has anything to do with that accident he had when he was six."
"Sis, someone like that isn't cut out for the workplace. You really shouldn't hire him."
Nathalie closed the application and looked up, noticing everyone across the table staring at her, mouths agape.
"Diego, how does this thing know so much about you? It's way more detailed than Wikipedia!"
Diego's proud demeanor turned into one of frustration.
"Nathalie, you didn’t have to embarrass me like that in front of everyone."
Nathalie chuckled, "Now we're even."
She grabbed her bag and waved, "I'll sort things out with my dad. You won’t need to come by Stewart Estate anymore."
And with that, she walked away.
As she left, she could hear Diego's friends ribbing him, "Diego, you really met your match this time."
"I’ve never seen you so speechless; and to think it was a woman who got you there."
"Haha."
Back at Stewart Estate.
Once home, Nathalie retreated to her room, locking the door behind her.
The past few days played over in her mind — the prison officer's laughter, Diego's classmates' disdain. It made her painfully aware that there's still a stigma against divorced women. Wealthy young men aren't usually eager to be with someone who's been divorced.
This realization left Nathalie uneasy. She was really worried about falling for Morris, even though she knew she shouldn't. He reminded her so much of Nathan. Sometimes she couldn't even tell if the man cherishing her was Nathan or Morris.
Lincoln found out about his daughter's ordeal from Diego and felt both guilty and heartbroken.
He stood outside Nathalie's bedroom door, apologizing over and over, "Vivian, I'm so sorry. It’s my fault. I didn’t know Diego had a girlfriend, which is why I introduced him to you. I never wanted you to be humiliated by his girlfriend. I let you down as a father."
Nathalie opened the door, masking all her insecurity and pain. She smiled, "Dad, I know you meant well. I don't blame you."
"But, Dad, can you stop getting involved with my personal life? I don't want to get married. Can I just stay with you?"
Lincoln's eyes welled up with tears. "Alright, alright. If Vivian doesn’t want to marry, I’ll be here for you forever."
From then on, Lincoln let go of the idea of setting his daughter up on dates.
At the prison.
In the meeting room, the task force was gathered. The screen above the podium displayed the mugshots of several criminals, along with their profiles.
