"Are you just asking for trouble?" Neil bellowed, grabbing Bonnie by the throat. His eyes were full of murderous intent.
Bonnie was practically lifted off the ground, gasping for air.
But he quickly tossed Bonnie aside and came to check on me.
I was pretty lucky. Just a couple of droplets of sulfuric acid hit my left cheek, but the pain was hard to ignore.
Neil quickly grabbed a towel and gently dabbed my cheek.
"Let's get you to the hospital," Neil decided, glancing at Bonnie before dialing Cooper Clarke to keep an eye on her.
Bonnie's eyes had no ounce of regret, just the satisfaction of revenge.
Neil called a couple of servants to watch over Bonnie before we headed to the hospital.
After some tests and treatment, the doctor said I was fine. Worst case scenario, I might have a couple of tiny scars on my cheek, but you'd have to squint to see them.
After taking my medicine, I just conked out on the hospital bed.
When I woke up, it was noon. I had a mini heart attack when I saw the time on my phone, thinking about work, but here came Neil with lunch.
"You're malnourished. You need to stay here for a while," Neil put the lunch on the table, giving me a cold look, "So, you want to be a workaholic?"
"I'm perfectly fine, just need to eat more," I was just worried about work.
Neil blocked me, "Eat your lunch first."
I frowned at him, "Can you stop mothering me?"
"I'll go with you to the meeting with SinoGems Corporation in three days," Neil tried to soothe me, "Isn't that your main project these days?"
Neil knew my work like the back of his hand, which was surprising and guilt-inducing. I was supposed to take over the company for my mom, yet I didn't know as much as Neil.
I took this lesson to heart.
"I've almost closed the deal," I declined and said, "Just one last step. No need for your help, Mr. Whitmore."
"Until the contract is signed, it's all talk. SinoGems Corporation is also working with other companies. Aren't you afraid of losing the opportunity?" Neil raised an eyebrow at me.
I recalled the president of SinoGems' recent attitude towards me, definitely colder than before. Plus, he could back out at the last minute with my family issues and choose someone else.
All my hard work would be for nothing then. But if Neil had come with me, things might have turned out differently.
Seeing my hesitation, Neil seemed to have read my mind and continued, "SinoGems Corporation is now seeking collaboration with Whitmore Co. If I reject them, they'd likely choose your company."
"You did this on purpose, didn't you?" I almost guessed Neil's intention. If not for him, our companies wouldn't be competitors.
Indeed, Neil admitted without any concealment, "Yes, I anticipated your refusal to collaborate, so I had approached other companies beforehand, and SinoGems was very interested."
I wanted to slap Neil. He obviously came to make trouble for me.
And now he was offering to accompany me to negotiate with SinoGems Corporation, and it was like criticizing me first and then comforting me.
"Neil, you're a shameless bastard!" I shouted at him but didn't hit him for fear of retaliation.
Neil's face turned sour instantly. After a few seconds of silence, he threatened me coldly, "If you don't eat and stay in the hospital on time, I'll sign the contract with SinoGems Corporation right away."
With that, he turned to leave.
Turned out Cooper told Mitch Hebert, who then told Stella.
Stella was taking her kid for a vaccination today and couldn't come. Alicia had an important meeting and asked Barbara to check on me.
Neil and I are so closely knit that any small incident between us can spread like wildfire in our relationship web.
"Bonnie's been nabbed. She's in the police station now," Barbara was filling me in on recent events, "If Neil decides to come down on her, she will get some heat for sure. I don't know if Gloria's gonna pull strings for her."
"She totally will," I replied without a second thought.
Even though I had no idea why Gloria was so soft on Bonnie, my gut told me she would keep shielding Bonnie.
Barbara nodded and said, "That woman's got some serious clout. She might just have a trick up her sleeve to get Bonnie out of this mess."
Seeing a lot of food still on the table, I let out a burp and slid a plate over to Barbara, saying, "Come on, dig in."
Barbara happened to have missed lunch, so we chatted while chowing down, and in no time, we'd polished off all the food on the table.
"I'm heading off now, and I'll come see you again tomorrow." In the afternoon, Barbara left the hospital room, full and satisfied, while I rested in bed.
Then, Oscar gave me a call.
I hadn't been in touch with Oscar for a while, mainly because I had been swamped and didn't have time for chitchats. But now that I was hospital-bound, I had plenty of spare time.
"Irene, what did Bonnie do to you? Are you badly hurt?" Oscar asked, sounding worried.
"I'm fine, Oscar, don't sweat it." Every time I heard Oscar's concern, I felt like I was being cared for by my little brother, and it lifted my spirits.
