Drystan’s POV
The grand hall of the Shadowfang Pack buzzed with anticipation as all the guests from different Packs gathered together.
Their murmurs echoed off the marble walls as the others used their extra time to meet the different leaders from other Packs and hopefully gain new connections and alliances.
While everyone was enjoying this festivity, I was tainted by deep, overwhelming sorrow, knowing what this ceremony meant between Astrid and me.
Last night, I failed to change her mind. Things are much worse now that I know what Astrid’s plan for revenge is.
I stood in the shadows, waiting patiently for the ceremony to end. I stood at the corner of the room, away from everyone’s eyes, to avoid their attention.
I’m in no mood to interact with anybody. I just silently scanned the whole crowd, seeing if there were any guests here that I could recognize.
Ever since I disrespected all the Alphas and declined alliances from all of them, I have been labeled as an arrogant man just because I have the Shadowfang Pack’s backing.
Even though some of them recognized me standing there, no one dared to approach me and start a small conversation with me.
I have announced to the whole world before that the Nightsong Pack has no plans of forming allies with anyone except for the Frostbite Pack and the Shadowfang Pack.
I almost let out a laugh when my eyes landed on Alpha Everest, the Alpha of the Frostbite Pack.
A lot of Alphas surrounded him, wanting to get their chance to talk to him and have an alliance with him.
He looked like a celebrity, gathered by his fans. Seeing his dilemma, I’m glad I’ve made the decision not to form any more alliances with other Packs.
Those Alphas know nothing but themselves and the things they could get from each other. Once they couldn’t benefit anything from you, they would break connections with you without a second thought.
I’ve already learned my lesson not to trust those Alphas. They would only let you down at the time you needed them the most.
It’s ironic that those Alphas don’t have loyalty when werewolves value loyalty the most.
“Drystan, you’re here,” Giselle exclaimed with an unnatural wide green.
I felt the muscles in my face instinctively tense as I laid eyes on her unwelcome form.
Years had passed since we last crossed paths. The enmity between us is as palpable as it had been then. I don’t know where she got her audacity to approach me without fear after all the things that she had done to us.
I didn’t hide the frown on my face from her so she would know that she was unwelcome.
Giselle smirked as she matched my pace. “Astrid betrayed you, didn’t she? She chose to be with the Alpha of the Shadowfang Pack instead of you,” Giselle continued talking, not taking the hint.
If only we were alone and the guests were not around to watch us, I’d yelled at her to leave me alone already.
“Well, you aren’t the first person she betrayed, Drystan. If she could betray her own mate, then she could certainly leave you to be with the Alpha of the Shadowfang Pack. That’s who she is! All she lives for is status and power,” Giselle continued, talking as she followed after me.
Hearing her words, I finally snapped and turned to face her. Luckily, I was able to hold myself together with the people around us still in mind. “Don’t compare Astrid to yourself, Giselle. She’s nowhere near you,” I hissed at her.
Giselle’s eyes turned wide. Her cheeks flushed red as she felt humiliated by my words. “Of course she is not like me. She is worse than me! Look, where is she? The rumors are all true, she’s dating the Alpha that’s why she’s even unafraid to show up late in this ceremony,” Giselle taunted.
I laughed. I was able to laugh at the absurdity of her words knowing that after this, she’s going to find out the truth.
Once Astrid’s identity is out, she’s going to eat all the words that she says.
“Just wait,” I answered in front of her baffled face. “Just wait when she arrives,” I walked out, and she didn’t bother to trouble me this time.
Now, I understand why Astrid decided to go through with this ceremony. This is what it takes to make those people open their eyes.
