Alaric’s POV 

The Arbun family of Pack BloodyMoon is renowned for their deep care and loyalty toward their kin–a trait that is on full display at this very moment. 

“What’s going on?!” 

“What’s wrong with Mia?!…she’s weald” 

“What did you do, Alaric?!” 

Those sounds come from Cara’s brothers. 

“I’m okay, Mama,” Mia says weakly after she catches her breath. “It was just the ice 

cream. 

Cara leans down in front of her daughter, the resemblance between the two even more striking now that we’re in a well–lit space. Cara rubs Mia’s leg at the injection site, “You know you’re allergic to ice cream, Mia.” 

Cara’s voice was soft and motherly, not mean or harsh. Cara placed her hand on Mia’s forehead, checking for fever. 

But she looks even more exhausted herself–she’s been through too much tonight. 

“I know, Mama. But I was having fun!” Mia says happily. 

It almost brings a smile to my face, the strong spirit in this little one. Until I see the terrible scowl on Cara’s face, directed at me. 

“What were you thinking?” she says to me sharply. “She’s allergic to too many things to risk a midnight snack.” 

“Yes, I’m sorry honestly, But how was I supposed to know that?” I ask her, genuinely baffled why. 

“Mommy, don’t blame Uncle,” Mia says softly. 

“Thank you, Mia, but it really is my fault… I’m sorry,” I reply. “I thought giving a four–year -old some ice cream was normal. I never imagined it would make her unwell. I’m so sorry. 

Cara got a confused look on her face, “She’s not f–,” Then, as if suddenly snapping out of it, she cuts herself off mid–sentence 

“She’s a child.” She said simply instead. 

“Yeah, well maybe you should keep a closer eye on her then if she’s so fragile,” I mutter in reply.

“I’m not fragile. I just have allergies.” Mia said confidently. 

Cara smiled at her daughter, “That’s right, you’re not fragile at all.” Cara turns back to me with a stern look on her face, “You’re just such a terrible fa-” 

Cara stops herself from speaking again, this time eyes wide, almost looking guilty. “It’s just been a very, very long day,” she says after taking a deep breath. 

I look at Cara. Her shoulders are a bit slumped, her face has that nasty scrape from the attack that she’d just been through… 

“If it helps…” I offer, “DarkWood’s hospital just hired some new doctors. The medical chief told me the new doctors specialize in all different types of allergies. I’m sure I could arrange an appointment for Mia.” 

Just like the treatment my doctor provided Mia tonight, perhaps this approach would be more effective. DarkWood’s medical advancements far surpass those of BloodyMoon- 

“Watch your words,” Colin says calmly, cutting me off. “The doctors in BloodyMoon have been diligently researching new treatments for Mia. We also have state–of–the–art 

facilities.” 

“Yes, but it’s obvious that BloodyMoon’s treatment isn’t working,” I counter. 

I glance at Mia, still resting in her mother’s arms. When she notices me looking, she offers 

a weak but sweet smile. 

That smile tugs at me, making me want to smile back, but Cara’s wary gaze freezes me in place. 

My heart sinks. 

“This medical plan is part of a confidential DarkWood project,” I say, turning to Eamon.” As a gesture of goodwill from DarkWood to BloodyMoon, I’m willing to offer an opportunity for BloodyMoon’s little princess, Mia…” 

I pause. “Mia Arbun.” 

They don’t interrupt me. 

…So Cara’s daughter has her last name? She didn’t give Mia her husband’s surname? 

“I’m willing to provide Mia Arbun, the princess of BloodyMoon, with free access to our advanced medical treatments, everyweek.” 

Cara looks shocked. She shoots Eamon a look, but I can’t quite decipher what it means. Eamon nods his head, and I get the feeling he’s encouraging Cara to consider the idea. 

“I… We…. We’re fine with BloodyMoon’s medical team. Thank you, though, really.” Cara says to me.

“No, Cara, just accept the help,” I tell her. “This isn’t about you and me, I promise. This is about Mia.” I look at Eamon, trying to get him to agree. 

Eamon gives me a hard stare before turning to Cara. “While normally I would say Alaric’s promises aren’t worth much…” 

Well, he’s got me there. After all, I did promise him that I’d never see his sister ever again. And here she is, standing in my phone. 

“But in this case, I think it’s a good idea. Mia hasn’t shown any improvement lately with the ideas BloodyMoon’s team has come up with so far…” Eamon finishes, turning to his 

sister. 

All eyes are on Cara as she weighs the decision. She looks torn. 

“Marua… “Mia said weakly. We noticed that her condition seemed to have worsened. 

“We need a hospital,” Cara says to me, her face full of concern. 

“Let’s go, we’ll take my car,” I tell her, reaching for my keys.
