Chapter 109
FREDA WHITLOCK
“Kaiden!” I yelled with horror, not knowing what to do. Oh goddess… Oh dear goddess…
Cole looked at Kaiden and his face was contorted woth rage. I did not want any more of this violence and I had better luck. asking Cole to leave than I did with Kaiden.
“Cole…Cole please, go inside. I’ll take care of this. I’m so sorry…I’m so so sorry,” I rushed out my jumbled, panicked words and his eyes softened as he looked at me. He nodded and glared at Kaiden before he walked into the kitchen and then headed out to the backyard through the door that was there.
I looked at Kaiden and the expression on his face broke my heart as much as his words earlier. I understood his pain and his anger, but I was not really sure what decision to make right. now would be.
“Kaiden…” I whispered, taking a step towards him. “Kaiden, look. at me,” I whispered and against all wisdom took his hand.
He looked down at me and I saw tears in his eyes before he blinked them away. My heart that was in pieces broke even harder and I bit my lip.
“Why would you do that to me? Why are you doing this? Why are you trying so hard to take my son away from me? I care about him. I love him, why won’t you believe me? I made a mistake
with you… That doesn’t mean I don’t regret it and want to make up for it in any way possible,” he said and I took a deep breath, not sure what to say to him. I always had all the reasons I did. not want him near my son, but now, I did not have anything to say or do in the face of his pain.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered and he looked at me with tears in his eyes. He blinked rapidly and looked away from me, trying to hide his fears but I had already seen them and they were making me feel like a horrible person. I understood him. I understood his pain. And I was realizing that nothing was supposed to make me take him away from his son, just the way I would not want anyone to keep me from Francisco.
I took in a deep breath. “I’m sorry, I whispered again, with tears in my eyes now. I was sorry. I was. I really was. He stepped away from me, looking me in my eyes as he pulled his hand from mine. I did not realize I was feeling a connection and warmth to him until he disconnected our hands. It was ripped away from me and the urge I felt to cry came all the more stronger.
He shook his head and walked out of the door without saying a word. Maybe he was not the bad person in this situation. I was. I definitely was.
After Kaiden left, I stood in the spot he had left me, staring into space and thinking hard. Unwanted tears filled my eyes and spilled over to my cheeks. I wiped them furiously because now I was in a horrible fix. I knew I was going to have to apologize to Kaiden for the horrible thing I had done, despite the problems between us. It was the right thing to do.
I took in a deep breath and as I turned around to go back into

my room, I remembered that Cole had gone to the backyard. I gasped and ran out to meet him. “Cole!” I called. He turned. around to look at me and I saw that his lip had a small cut and it was bleeding. “Cole, I’m so so sorry,” I apologized profusely and he looked at me with a small smile.
“It’s okay. You’re not the one that hit me,” he said, attempting to stop all of my apologies. “It doesn’t matter if I did or not. You got hit because you were defending me. I appreciate your defending me but I feel so bad that you were hit because of me,” I said, looking into his eyes as I pulled out a handkerchief from the back pocket of my loose pants and wiped the blood.
“Believe me, Freda. It’s okay. He’s a jerk and that’s the only. reason I got hit,” he said and I looked away from him to blink back my tears before nodding my head. “I should probably get going now,” he said, looking in the direction of the kitchen door that lead to the backyard. “You probably have a lot to handle,” he said with a small smile. I turned to look where he was looking and found Lyra standing off to the side with Francisco beside her.
“Okay,” I said and nodded. He headed towards the door and greeted Lyra with a nod. He smiled at Francisco but Francisco did not respond. Not even with a smile. His expression was the same. That worried me because normally he would have smiled or responded with a wave.
“Bye. Please take care. And I’m sorry about everything,” I called as Cole entered his car and drove off. I let out a small sigh and walked back into the house towards the kitchen. I looked at what was left of my breakfast. It was the same but it was probably ice cold and it was a waste now. I was starving, but at the same time. I had to explain the situation to Lyra.
