Chapter 123
KAIDEN STIRLING
“F**k,” I sighed and she looked at me.
“What are you thinking?” She asked in a quiet voice. I looked at her and shook my head. “I don’t think you want to know,” I said with a chuckle that sounded all forms of sad. D**n it, I was pathetic.
“You better not be thinking of f***ng me,” she bluntly said, trying to ease the mood with a joke. I raised my eyebrow and she shook her head with a small smile. “Sorry, that was s*d,” s**he said, and I pressed my lips together, wondering what exactly we were doing here.
“What exactly are we doing here?” I asked, taking a step towards her. She bit the inside of her cheek and he heart rate rose. I could hear it. My wolf was on the edge and on edge, clawing to be let loose so he could go and find our mate and get her from that human male.
My senses were always a thousand times amplified when I was on edge like this. It made the entire feeling worse.
“What are you talking about?” She asked, angling her face towards me so she could look at me properly. “You know what I’m talking about, Lyra. You hate me. You can’t even stand me. Why are you here? Why are you talking to me? Asking me what’s going on with me?” asked through gritted teeth.

I was going to have to leave soon before I flipped my ***t on her. That would be grossly unfair because she was just trying to be nice… Or she was talking to me out of pity.
S**t. I could not stand that thought. Maybe I was an egotistical ba**rd and a dumb f**king a**hole, but I hated pity. If there was anything I hated more than the man who was so obviously trying to take my mate from me, it was pity.
“Don’t tell me you’re talking to me out of pity!” I spat the word ‘pity’ like it was venom. “You see that I’m miserable because of your best friend, and you’re talking to me out of pity,” I growled, and the look in her eyes changed from a forced calmness to fury.
“My friend is making you miserable?” She questioned. “You’re making yourself miserable! You did this to yourself. You and your s**id indecisiveness. You have made her suffer. She still suffers from the things you have done to her and you’re here talking about being miserable?” She yelled, taking steps towards me and slamming her fist in my chest.
“All of this is your fault! It’s your fault I can’t even be nice to you without you thinking I’m pitying you! I don’t pity you. I f**ki*g loathe you!” She spat and it seemed that the fire my words had started calmed after that. We both stood silent, watching each
other.
“Then why are you here?” I asked, and a small smile touched her lips. “Maybe I do pity you,” she said with a small smile and we both burst into laughter. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” she said through her laughter and tears started to spill from my eyes as I laughed.
I turned away from her. Not only was I miserable, I was pathetic.

Her words were true and they had cut through to me. They had hit too close to home.
“Does she like him?” I asked once the heat of our laughter had died down. “What?” She asked as I turned around to look at her. She saw the tears in my eyes and pity filled her gaze. I hated it, so I looked away from her face. “D-does she love him? Are they together?” I asked again, refusing to look at her as I expected the answer that would cut through me.
Maybe that would be the last straw. Maybe that would be what would stop my love for her.
Love… Was I in love with her? Go**amn it, I was. I had always been. Always. She had been my place of comfort when I was messing around with both her and her sister years ago. She had been the person I would talk to, the person I would pour my heart into, the person I would make love to.
And I had let her go for a distraction… Her sister. An excitement that died almost as soon as the love of my d***n life left. Goddess help me, she was the bane to my existence. She had loved me. She had cared for me. She had begged for me to love her back.
Now she was moving on and I was getting a taste of the things I had done to her.
It was excruciating. It was agonizing. It was hell.
Lyra’s phone beeped, indicating that a text had come in. I looked at her as she pulled up the text. She looked at me and shook her head. “I have to go,” she said. She was not going to answer my question.

She walked out of the door, and I was left alone. Both literally and figuratively. In every sense of the d**n word.
