Nydia and Jennifer were both surprised.

“Did you downplay the danger of it? I just feel something wrong,” said Nydia, glancing at Gloria in the rearview mirror.

Jennifer looked at Gloria silently.

Gloria hesitated for a moment before she spoke softly.

“He cared about me as much as he had done before, but I could feel that he was getting more discreet. And his voice was kind of laden with mixed emotions. After making sure I was OK, he said he would leave me alone and then hung up.”

Nydia was surprised. “Really? Did he really say that?”

Gloria nodded. “Yeah.”

Nydia made a left turn and then said, “Oh no, why do I feel like he’s a different person? I can’t believe that came out of his mouth. He loves to be with you every day, doesn’t he? He has been in love with you for so long after all.”

“I was a bit surprised, but since he said so, I could only play along. I didn’t want to give him hope.” Gloria didn’t sound very curious but calm.

Jennifer took a breath and said with mixed feelings, “I’m the reason he’s like this. I don’t know if it’s right or wrong.”

Nydia sensed something wrong. She spotted a parking space on the side of the road, drove over immediately, and then parked the car.

Gloria turned back to Jennifer. Instead of pressing her, Gloria was waiting for her to speak.
