Serena’s face darkened as she frowned at Alicia. “He said after I have the baby, we can’t divorce for three years?”
Alicia nodded. “Yeah. Isn’t that the Lynch family rule?”
“What kind of rule is that…” Serena’s breathing quickened, and she seemed ready to argue, but swallowed her words with a wry smile. “Maybe they’re just worried a newborn will keep me up at night and wear me out. Taking care of a baby is exhausting, after all. By the time the kid’s three, things get easier.”
Alicia lowered her eyes, falling silent.
She couldn’t expect too much. It was foolish to imagine she’d have any chance of fighting Tyrone for custody if they divorced.
“Mom, you should really take care of yourself. You don’t need to worry about someone else’s child,” Melanie muttered, eyes down, mechanically poking at her food as if it were cardboard.
Serena glanced at Melanie but didn’t reply.
A moment later, Tyrone returned. He asked the waiter to bring Alicia some scrambled eggs with tomato and a few refreshing salads. “You don’t seem to have much of an appetite tonight. Try these—fresh from the kitchen, just for you.”
He took the seat beside Alicia and lowered his voice. “See if you like them.”
Alicia shot a nervous glance at Tyrone, nodded, and took a bite. The tangy salad was surprisingly good.
Seeing her nod in approval, Tyrone smiled. “Eat a little more, or you’ll be hungry later.”
Every so often, Alicia stole a glance at him. Was he always this attentive? Especially in front of Serena? Surely that would spark some jealousy.
Sure enough, Serena’s expression grew even darker.
She quietly sipped her soup, but after a few mouthfuls, she pressed a hand to her chest and grimaced. “Ugh… Tyrone, I’m not feeling well. Can you drive me to the hospital?”
Melanie stared at her mother, numb and silent.
No one knew Serena better than her own daughter. Melanie could see right through her—she was just trying to get Tyrone’s attention.
