Alicia gave a small, cold smile. “And what if I asked Vincent to call off his engagement to Mina? Would the Lawsons agree to that, too?”

Vincent’s mother frowned, glancing at Mina as if to soothe her. “Of course. As long as you’re willing to drop the charges, the Lawsons might consider your request.”

Alicia almost laughed—it was both pathetic and absurd. Under the veneer of high society, all these respectable families wore ugly, shameless faces.

Vincent arrived in a rush, anxiety written all over him. He looked as if he feared his mother might do something reckless to Alicia.

His expression darkened as he moved to shield Alicia. “Mom, you promised me you wouldn’t come after Alicia. I told you—I’ll handle this!”

“Handle what? Your great solution is hiring a lawyer to get your sister a lighter sentence? Your sister can’t go to prison!” Vincent’s mother was furious.

Vincent stood his ground beside Alicia. “They broke the law. They deserve punishment. If they get a reduced sentence, it’s already more than they deserve.”

Vincent’s mother slammed her hand on the table and stood abruptly. “Vincent, your grandfather adores Mira. If you mess this up, think carefully. If your grandfather loses faith in you and lets that bastard son into the family, what place do you think you’ll have left among the Lawsons?”

Vincent’s face was tight with anger.

“We’re leaving.” Vincent’s mother motioned for Mina to follow her out, deliberately giving Vincent and Alicia some privacy.

She was even willing to use her own son as bait for Mira’s sake.
