Rich Radiant and Over Him (Alicia and Vincent) novel Chapter 25

Vincent knew perfectly well that Alicia couldn't take any more emotional shocks.

Four years ago, she'd already shown signs of self-harm and suicidal thoughts. If she was pushed again this time, it could make everything so much worse.

He knew all of it.

He just didn't care.

Just like that day: Vincent, eager to please Mina, had called her over even though he knew Henry and Mira would be there. He'd done it knowing full well what it would cost Alicia—maybe even her life.

"You should get some rest." Vincent's voice was oddly gentle. He knew the decision about the overseas program would be settled soon, and he had to talk to Mina now.

Alicia leaned weakly against the wall, waiting for Vincent to give her an answer.

Vincent drove to the Holloway estate.

He parked outside the grand house, but then hesitated. He'd promised Mina he'd help her cousin get this opportunity. Today, he'd already told her the spot was hers. If he backed out now…

Mina would almost certainly guess there was something going on between him and Alicia.

Vincent let his head fall back against the seat, his temples throbbing. On one side was Alicia; on the other, Mina. He was trapped, unable to choose.

If he was honest, Alicia was easier—quieter, more obedient, easier to comfort.

Vincent had thought about making it up to Alicia, giving her more to compensate. But the way she was today made him unaccountably uneasy.

He sat in silence for a long time before finally calling Mina.

"Hey, Mina? Are you still awake?"

Upstairs, on the second floor of the Holloway house, Mina stood at her window and spotted Vincent's car outside.

She frowned slightly, then forced a sleepy yawn. "Mmm… I was just about to fall asleep. It's been a long day."

"Mina…" Vincent began, searching for words.

Sensing what he might say, Mina cut him off, her voice trembling just so. "Vincent… I'm scared. I just had a nightmare. I dreamt William hit me… Those four years in Vesperia, not a day went by I didn't think of you…"

"You know, Vin, I only married William because I had no choice. We were both so young back then. You weren't in a position to protect me, and I had to do what my family wanted. It was never what I wanted." Mina's voice broke into a sob.
