He continued to stare even after she went inside, not taking his eyes off her. 

Lydia noticed and squeezed her fist tightly. With a bitter smile, she said, “Dalton, look at how well they get along.”

“Meryl, what should I do? Yancey’s gone missing, and I’m afraid something happened to him.” 

Anne was growing increasingly uneasy, feeling like Yancey suddenly leaving wasn’t something he would do. 

Anne recounted the argument she had with Yancey outside Paltrow Manor that morning, telling Meryl everything in detail.

There was a lot of background noise on the other end, and the voice speaking was in a dialect, sounding like a middle–aged man. There was a faint sound of a woman crying. 

Yancey moved further away, and the background noise grew fainter. 

His voice sounded light, “There’s something going on at home. I went back to my hometown.” 

Meryl said, “But Anne’s really worried about you.” 

There was a long silence on the other end, so long that Meryl thought the call had dropped. 

She checked her phone to see if it was still connected, then said, “When are you coming back?” 

The man who had been yelling at Yancey in the background now· called his name again as though ordering him to do something! 

Yancey’s fingers tightened around the phone. “Please tell Anne… we should break up. I’m not good enough for her.”
