In Dallas, Grant returned home three days later. The dwelling was dark. He

He checked his phone, reviewing our past messages. I’d sent numerous
messages–daily updates, complaints, and requests for a meeting. His replies
were always brief–okay, understood, yes. Sometimes, he didn’t even reply. And
I had endured it.
Then, he realized my last message was from over two weeks prior.
Rosie hasn’t spoken to me in so long? He mused.
Unease settled over him. He messaged me, for the first time in days.
“Is all well? When do you return?”
There was no reply. It was eleven o’clock at night. He sighed, assuming that I
was asleep.

Then he saw a note. Each word hit him like a hammer.
“Grant, we are severed. I am bonding with another, but not with you.”
He reread it, hoping it was a jest. He wished he had an excuse to accuse me
But the truth was undeniable. It wasn’t a joke. I meant it.
