His anxiety grew. He tried to open

the door but it was locked. A chalkboard

read: Closed today.

He’d thought it meant I was waiting

for him so I refused to take guests. But it

actually meant I refused to see him.

He realized I’d tricked him. I never

planned to meet him. I was just tell him to

give up on me in this way.

He stared at the guesthouse. We’d

talked about opening a guesthouse by the

sea, in which would could enjoy the

breeze together. To satisfy me, he’d

bought several guesthouses and would

occasionally take me on vacation there. In

the past, we were really happy.
