That night, I had a high fever. Grant didn’t come back, and I was too weak
even to call 911. I managed to find some pills and swallowed them down with
water, then collapsed back into bed, burning up with fever. Finally, I drifted into
a feverish sleep.
After a day and night, the fever went down. I heard the door open.
Grant walked in, ignoring me, packing his bags. Only when he was finished
did he finally give me a glance.
“Wanda’s not doing well. I’ll be with her for a few days. Call me if you need
anything.”
Seeing him leave without a second glance, I chuckled bitterly. What good would a phone call do? I was pale and ill, and he didn’t even notice. Could I really
expect him to leave Wanda for me?
The next few days, Grant never returned, nor did he call me. Yet, I knew exactly where he was, thanks to Wanda’s incessant updates on Moments. I saw pictures of him making her soup, peeling shrimp, taking her out for walks and
fireworks…
I didn’t pay much attention to what they were doing. Once I recovered, I
resigned from my job.
