"What are you doing here?" Christina asked Max much to the surprise of Nathan who couldn't quite figure out what was going on at the moment. Christina looked upset and that was his first time seeing her upset.
Did she have unsettled business with this man or was he a bother? The energy between them was off but still, he didn't say anything.
"I came here to pick you up. Can't you tell? Why else would I be here off all places especially when I don't attend your college to begin with?" It was Max's turn to ask this time around but Christina wasn't having any of it.
He couldn't blame her though. He had been a jerk by saying all those things to her the first day they met so he understood why she didn't want him around. He owed her an apology, which was why he agreed to pick her up.
At first, when Bryce had called him to help him out, he had almost declined with the excuse of being busy but when Bryce said that it was about Christina, he readily agreed. Hera was a friend and more like a sister to him. She loved him and never judge him and Max didn't want to be on bad terms with her sister of all people. He knew he had to fix her impression of him, somehow even though she was quite stubborn about it.
"Come on, let's go. The sooner we leave, the better." Max instructed and opened up the door to the front seat but Christina didn't move an inch from where she stood. There's no way he would tell her that he came here to pick her up and have her believe him. And there's absolutely no way she would share a car with him too.
"Is he a stranger? Is he bothering you?" Nathan asked and Max sized him up with an amused smile playing on his lips. "If you're not safe with him then you can tell me and I promise not to let him get any closer to you or hurt you."
"Please. She's more safe with me than the likes of you or anyone else." He cautioned Nathan and shifted his eyes to Christina. "Go on. Tell your little crush that I'm not a stranger to you, cupcake?" Max told her but her face only tightened in a deep frown. She knew that it was wrong to hate someone but she just can't help it. He's just so annoying on all levels. He's the real definition of unlikable.
"It's Christina and not cupcake. Where is Bryce and why isn't he here? He was supposed to pick me up and not you. He never mentioned anything about you coming. If he had, I would've declined and found my way home."
Max shook his head and sighed at her words. He pulled out his cellphone and dialled a number. When the receiver picked up on the third ring, he put it on speaker and handed it over to Christina who took it reluctantly.
"Hello?" She spoke into the phone and Bryce's voice came through. "I thought that you were coming to pick me up big brother."
"I was but then I got caught up with something urgent so I couldn't make it and had to send Max instead. He's the only one I could trust to get you back home safely kiddo."
Trust? Yeah right! Bryce was better off trusting a demon than this man, Christina thought to herself but she didn't say it out loud. She only glanced at him briefly just to see him watching her with keen eyes.
"You're in safe hands kiddo. I told you right? That Max is just another version of me. You won't even tell the difference. He'd take care of you just as I would, trust me." Bryce assured her and Christina wished that she could counter that statement. She wished that Bryce could take it back. Of course she could tell the difference. It was as different as day and night.
And did he just say trust? Safe hands? There's definitely no way she's trusting him. Trust and Max shouldn't even be in one sentence to begin with.
"Alright big brother. I guess I'll see you later then." She said before handing the phone over to Max. They spoke for a while before he disconnected it.
"Are you satisfied now?" Max questioned but even though she wasn't, she couldn't say it. Max pushed the car door wider and gestured inside with his eyes for her to get in. Christina had no choice but to do so. She managed to put on her seat belt when she was settled in.
He turned to face the guy who had come with her. "You can run along now little boy. This woman is my problem now."
Before Christina could counter that statement, Max shut the door and made his way towards the other side. He got in and started the ignition before pulling out of the premises.
