Arthur nodded, noticing that the host was deliberately shielding them from guests who wanted to chat, so he was relieved and recounted the story of Esmae's relationship with his parents. Chris was impressed.

"I see. No wonder Esmae is so hostile to you. Even though she's my wife and I should be on her side, as an onlooker, I don't think Esmae's hatred will stand up.
