Chapter 288: Blood on White Lace

I stood frozen, staring at Christopher’s tall frame blocking me from Lennifer. He wore a black suit that hung slightly loose on his frame, as if he’d lost weight.

I barely recognized him with the unkempt heard covering his once meticulously clean–chaven face. His eyes, though–those hadirt changed.

The same amber eyes that matched my own, a coincidence we’d both remarked on years ago. They held the same intensity as always, now focused entirely on Jennifer.

I never thought he would come. After sending the invitation, I’d convinced myself our paths would never cross again. Yet here he was, standing between me and danger, just as he had so many times before..

Before I could even process what was happening, Sean and my father surrounded me, creating a protective barrier. Aria buried her face against my chest, her little body shaking with sobs.

“She’s so ugly and mean!” Aria cried, her fingers clutching at my dress. “Why would she try to hurt you, Mommy?”

Victoria quickly moved to comfort her while Thomas and two security guards restrained Jennifer, wrestling the knife from her hand. The wedding guests formed a circle around us–Emily, Nathan, Evan, Sophie, and others–all creating a human shield.

Sean’s hands moved frantically over me and the children, checking for injuries. “Are you hurt? Did she touch you?” His voice was tight with panic.

“We’re fine,” I assured him, though my own heart was still racing. I turned to Sophie, forcing a smile. “Your carefully designed wedding dress is ruined, though.”

Sophie shook her head in disbelief. “You’re making jokes at a time like this? It’s just a dress. I’ll design ten more for you–a hundred, even. I’m just glad you’re not hurt.”

When the initial shock subsided, I looked around for Christopher, spotting him making his way toward the exit. I gently detached myself from everyone and called out to him.

“Christopher!”

He didn’t turn around fully, just twisted his head slightly so I could see his profile. “You look beautiful today,” he said softly. His eyes held so many emotions at once–regret, well–wishes, sadness, and perhaps a touch of letting go..

“Thank you,” I said, meaning it for far more than just the compliment. “For what you did just now.”

He didn’t respond, just paused for a moment before continuing toward the door. I watched his retreating figure, my feelings a complicated knot of gratitude, sadness, and something I couldn’t quite name.

Suddenly, Christopher stumbled and collapsed to the floor. That’s when I noticed the trail of blood he’d left behind him. My heart lurched into my throat.

I rushed to his side, kneeling beside him. His black suit jacket had been slashed open, and he was clutching his chest where dark, sticky blood seeped between his fingers.

The realization hit me like a physical blow–Christopher had taken the knife meant for me.

“Someone call an ambulance!” I shouted, pressing my hands over his to help stop the bleeding.

The children, seeing Christopher on the ground, became even more distraught. Aria’s wails grew louder. “What’s wron Christopher? she sobbed, trying to move closer.

My heart ached, remembering how, despite everything, Christopher had never been anything but kind to the children. He’d helped raise them during those first difficult years. Even when he’d kept us on that island, he’d always treated us with cars.

Just last night, Aria had asked if “Uncle Christopher would be at the wedding so she could show him her new dress. I’d told her te was too busy to come.

Now we were reunited in the worst possible way.

Victoria quickly gathered Aria in her arms. “He just fell down, sweetheart. He’ll be fine soon,” she said soothingly, then turned to me. “I should take the children home. This is too much for them.”

I nodded gratefully. The children had already experienced enough trauma for one day.
