Frowning, he strode over to Winne and instantly snatched the phone from the latter’s hand.
Xavier’s gaze turned icy after glancing at the image on the phone.
“What’s going on? Explain! Right now!” he instructed Winnie right off.
The latter rolled her eyes and uttered, “What’s with that look? Don’t you know if I’m pregnant or not?”
“I knew it too well that I knew the child is not mine. Who is the father of the child? Tell me!” Xavier questioned through gritted teeth. His eyes were ablaze with anger.
“Is it him?” Xavier added. He then turned around and shot Josiah a ferocious glare.
“No! It’s not me. I’m definitely innocent.” Josiah quickly raised both of his hands and denied it.
“Then why am I the only one who is unaware of the truth?” asked Xavier.
“I just got to know about it, too. Are your trust issues getting worse?” Josiah felt wronged that even his expression was contorted.
“I’ve got trust issues?” Xavier furrowed his brows and continued, “It’s all proven, but you’re still de-”
“Oh, use your head!” Unable to hold it any longer, Winnie, who stood at the side, raised her purse and hurled it in Xavier’s face. “You’re so ill. Go stand at the side!” she added.
Xavier grabbed Winnie’s hand nimbly upon getting hit in his face. However, he could not bear to exert much force subconsciously.
“What do you mean? Are you getting rid of me?” uttered Xavier.
“D*mn it!” Winnie snapped and placed her palm on her forehead. “Do you still want to listen to my explanation?” she asked.
“Isn’t it obvious? No man can stand being cuckolded, no?” Xavier sneered.
Winnie was rendered speechless. At that moment, she wished so badly that she could land a blow on Xavier’s head. “The fox preys farthest from home. I wouldn’t have sought out Josiah even if I wanted to cuckold you. Hmm, it’s not convenient to talk here. Let’s talk somewhere else,” Winnie suggested.
“Okay. I’ll give you a chance to explain.”
With that said, Xavier dragged Winnie along as he strode toward a lounge.
Before Josiah could follow them inside, Xavier had already slammed the lounge door shut.
Josiah, who almost had his nose fractured by the slam, knocked on the door and shouted, “Hey! My phone!”
“You come in as well!” The lounge door was opened immediately after Josiah finished his words.
Without delay, a fair and slender hand grabbed Josiah’s necktie and pulled him in.
Once again, the door was shut.
Raising the phone with the image and conversation, Winnie questioned, “What’s going on? I just headed to the obstetrics and gynecology department to attend to something. The next moment, you’ve already gotten my photo and my receipt. Is this a hospital or a surveillance room? Don’t your hospital patients have privacy?”
Josiah paled visibly after being questioned.
He knitted his brows as he explained, “It’s all because you have become famous. From the dumb*ss of the Garland family, you’ve become the lady of Fairchild Corporation and then the newly appointed CEO of Garland Group. Moreover, as the Vinnie Couple, you’re now as popular as those trending celebrities. The nurse working in the hospital likes you and knows about my relationship with the Fairchild family. That was why she was paying extra attention to you. We’re also friends, right? Isn’t it normal for me to care about you? As Xavier’s wife, you should also explain why you’re doing this, no? You guys are a married couple. You can’t decide on pregnancy all by yourself.”
Winnie massaged the bridge of her nose and responded, “I went to pay for the bill, but this doesn’t mean the abortion was mine. Who told you that? Can’t I pay for someone else?”
With a deep frown, Xavier asked, “You’re unfamiliar with this place. You don’t even go out frequently. Who are you acquainted with? Who are you paying the bills for?”
Winnie sighed and said, “You won’t remember even if I tell you.”
“Oh, enlighten me, then.” Xavier chuckled coldly.
Exhausted, Winnie sat on a chair at the side and expounded, “Okay. The one who contacted me a while ago was Mr. Zimmerman. His daughter, Rachel, is mentally disabled. A few months ago, she was kidnapped and brought to Sirona Island. Later, she was taken advantage of by a man called Hayden Briggs. Now that Rachel is pregnant, Mr. Zimmerman brought her here for an operation. However, there is some problems with Rachel’s health insurance. Thus, I went over to help out. Do you guys get it now?”
Xavier narrowed his eyes and asked, “Which island did you say?”
“Sirona Island.”
“Why are you related to the people on Sirona Island? Have you been there? When did you go there?”
Winnie glanced at Xavier with a meaningful look. “Hmm… A month ago. I went there with you. You mistook Rachel for me and deliberately went there to look for me,” said Winnie.
Xavier’s frown deepened. “Huh? We went to an island together to look for you?”
“Y-Yes. You can put it that way.” Winnie heaved a sigh as Xavier did not seem to remember anything.
Earlier, she thought that Xavier intended to probe further. Much to her surprise, he responded by hugging her all of a sudden.
Xavier strode over and embraced Winnie. He felt so sorry for her as he spoke.
“Dumbo, you’re the only one who can make up such an absurd story. Is it because I did not spend much time with you recently? Don’t worry. I’ll make more time to keep you company in the future.”
Winnie, who was embraced tightly, was at a loss for words. Seconds later, she mumbled, “I… Thank you.”
After Xavier went to the washroom, Winnie took the chance to converse with Josiah. It was a race against time.
“How’s the result of his check-up?” Winnie asked.
“His brain structure is normal. It may be an issue with the central nervous system.”
“Then, you have to quickly look for the traditional medicine practitioner. Xavier seems so strange lately. Sometimes he sees us as enemies; sometimes, he sees us as his family. I reckon that he may develop dissociative identity disorder at any time.”
Josiah nodded and reassured her. “I understand. I’ll locate the traditional medicine practitioner as soon as possible. Anyhow, neurological diseases are very complicated. We can’t be impatient in hoping for recovery. The thing is that getting impatient doesn’t help, either. Oh, right. Later, I’ll get an expert to operate on Rachel.”
“That’s great. Please look for someone who is amiable. Rachel is different from ordinary people. I hope they can be treated considerately.”
“They, you said?” Josiah furrowed his brows as he added, “The lady is not the only one?”
Winnie hummed in response. With a slight frown, she explained, “There are many people like Rachel in Chanaea. Some have congenital illnesses, and some develop them due to lesions or injuries. I shared the same experience in the past. Those were some dreadful days. Now that I’m capable, I want to help them. Rachel is only one of them.”
“All right. That’s it, then. Xavier is about to return, so we shouldn’t stay so close to each other now. Otherwise, it’s going to make him jealous,” Winnie added.
Josiah nodded and took the initiative to back away, putting some distance between them.
In truth, that day was the longest day Winnie had ever felt.
Feeling completely exhausted, she fell asleep in the car.
By the time she woke up, she noticed she was in Xavier’s embrace.
Xavier was about to lay her down on the bed.
Seeing that Winnie opened her eyes in a daze, Xavier knitted his eyebrows slightly. “Did I wake you up, Dumbo?”
Hmm… Xavier doesn’t look like a mentally deranged person when he isn’t speaking or gets quiet, like now.
Looking at Xavier at the moment, Winnie could not resist the urge to hook her arms around his neck. Following that, she said, “No. I woke up by myself. Are you tired after carrying me up the stairs?”
“Of course not. You should be very clear about my stamina, are you not?” Xavier smirked.
Since Winnie was still in her just-awakened state, her eyes were narrowed. Looking at her pair of eyes, Xavier curved a corner of his lips. “Are you looking at me like that to seduce me?”
“Haha!” Winnie had to admit that she was once again, amused by Xavier.
“What are you laughing at, huh? I’ll make you cry and beg for mercy later,” said Xavier.
“For real?”
