“Okay, I’ll come over right away.”
Hanging up the phone, Winnie quickened her pace and went back to Nate’s hospital room.
As she knew that Xavier was the only person in the hospital room then, her guard was lowered. For that reason, someone caught her off guard and hugged her the instant she pushed open the room door.
She instinctively tensed all over when she suddenly ended up in someone’s arms.
But soon, she relaxed, for she knew the person hugging her at that second was none other than Xavier.
Lifting her hand, she smacked him on the back. “You’ve got to remember that I’m not the average person. If it weren’t for my familiarity with your smell, you would’ve definitely gotten pummeled now.”
Xavier hugged her, the indulgence in his eyes so overwhelming that it could almost drown someone. “Don’t you know that I’m so reckless precisely because of that?”
As he spoke, he lowered his voice. “Say, Dumbo, how do other married couples deal with it? Why is it that I always feel that you’re far away from me? Whenever I can’t see you, the urge to tie you to my side grips me hard. Am I sick?”
“Yeah, you’re more or less sick, but I’ve got the cure. Are you interested in it?”
“Yup! I want everything you give me. You’re the only one who can cure me.” Burying his head in the crook of Winnie’s neck, Xavier took a deep breath of her natural fragrance.
Winnie understood that he was whispering sweet nothings to her.
To her, however, that remark also carried an underlying meaning.
He was injected with the venom by Yulissa in his bid to save me, but I’ll definitely cure him of it. Regardless of whether it’s the traditional or modern medicine route, I’ll do everything possible!
She lifted her hand and caressed his head. Subsequently, she asked, “Where’s Yulissa right now? We must capture her!”
Her tone was firm and resolute when she said that, so Xavier immediately dropped his hold on her.
He regarded her warily. “Don’t tell me you’re planning to go there in person?”
“Yes. I’ll worry if it were anyone else.” The expression on Winnie’s face was exceedingly solemn.
“But I’ll worry if you go. If you insist on going, I’ll go as well.”
Winnie went silent for a moment. She couldn’t make a decision right then. “How about this? Let’s put this aside for now since it’s not an easy decision to make. We must first devise a foolproof plan. Tell me the latest news about Yulissa without hiding anything from me.”
Frowning, Xavier pressed his lips into a thin line as he plunged into a brief silence.
Winnie threw him a look. “You know me, Xavier. No one can stop me from doing something I want to do. Even if you don’t tell me, I can investigate this by myself. It’s just a matter of time. Why make me mad for nothing?”
Indeed, she’s as obstinate as a mule. Even I, who has great influence in Avenport, can’t sway her.
“Don’t be mad. I’ll also be in a bad mood if you’re mad. Come and sit down here. I’ll tell you everything I know…”
“Is that all? In this case, Nate probably didn’t hear anything useful just now. But since he’s now aware of the fact that Yulissa is still alive, he won’t possibly stay in the hospital and recuperate docilely. He’ll definitely do something. Now that he’s on our opposing side, anything he does will be troublesome for us. He’s free to go and do whatever he wants, so we can’t guard against such a thing. As such, we must act quickly,” Winnie analyzed after listening to Xavier.
“Yes, but we can hire people—” “Shh! Someone’s here.”
Following Winnie’s warning, Xavier swiftly fell silent.
In no time, Nate and the others returned.
Winnie glimpsed Yolanda outside the door. Thus, she said to Xavier, “I’m going to seek Yolanda out. See you later.”
However, Yolanda wanted to take off as soon as she spotted Winnie.
Nonetheless, Winnie didn’t give her that chance. Striding forward, she grabbed Yolanda’s arm and stopped her from leaving.
Yolanda shot her a glare. “Why are you everywhere? Hurry up and let go of me!”
Instead of dropping her hold on the woman, Winnie increased the force of her grip instead.
“You should be grateful for that. Otherwise, there wouldn’t have been anyone to care for your grandfather. Do you know that he suffered a fall at home today in his bid to chase after you? He even broke his leg!”
Evidently, Yolanda didn’t believe her. “Are you insane? I don’t know why you’re stopping me from leaving, but I’d advise you to quit while you’re ahead if you’re joking about such a thing just to keep me here. No matter what, my grandfather was once your master.”
“Follow me to the orthopedic department if you don’t believe me and see whether your grandfather is having his leg placed in a cast!”
