“You’re right.” Xavier nodded with a frown on his face.
Right then, Lisanne—who was sitting across from Winnie and Xavier—got up abruptly and looked in the direction behind Winnie and Xavier nervously.
Winnie turned around subconsciously and looked behind her. Xavier also followed suit and turned around.
Then, they saw a married couple in their fifties who were supporting each other while standing around two meters away from Winnie and the rest.
At that moment, Lisanne spoke. “Mr. Bennett, Mdm. Sullivan, didn’t you already go upstairs? Why did you come back?”
It seemed like the old couple didn’t hear Lisanne’s question at all. They simply strode toward Lisanne and the rest anxiously.
Then, they walked directly to Xavier.
Xavier got to his feet to show them his respect.
Seeing Xavier, who was a complete stranger, standing in front of him, Christopher’s father clenched his wife’s hand and asked in a trembling voice, “Sir, we’re here to get something from Lisanne and overheard you saying you want to apologize to us. We even heard Lisanne saying that she worries we can’t handle the truth of what happened to Christopher. Can you tell me what exactly is going on?”
Xavier stood before the old couple and lowered his head.
He knew there was no way for him to delay this matter any further. Thus, he said guiltily, “Professor Bennett, Professor Sullivan, I’m sorry. I’m actually responsible for Captain Bennett’s sacrifice as well. I’m not asking for your forgiveness today. All I want is to reduce the pain you’re suffering from the loss.”
Previously, Xavier had already checked Christopher’s family background and found out his parents were both university professors. Therefore, he addressed them as such.
However, Xavier’s statement was too ambiguous, so Christopher’s parents didn’t understand what was going on at all.
Tears streamed down Madeline’s cheeks instantly. “What exactly is going on? What happened back then? Please tell us everything, will you? We need to know the truth.”
“Okay, I’ll explain everything that happened.” Xavier helped the old couple who had lost their son recently to sit down before kneeling in front of them.
“Xavier…” Winnie lowered her eyes and glanced at Xavier before kneeling beside him. “Let me explain it instead.”
“It’s all right. I was the one who did it, so I won’t let you take responsibility on my behalf.”
“No, it’s something we went through together. Besides, we’re a married couple. It’s only natural for us to shoulder it together.”
Seeing how Winnie was kneeling with him and atoning for his sins alongside him, Xavier felt warmth and pain blossoming in his heart. After staring at his beloved woman for a while, he quickly retracted his gaze.
After that, he began to share the story of what happened back then in Manchernius with the professors.
While he was explaining the entire situation, he didn’t spare any details and had no intention of dodging the responsibility.
Being Christopher’s mother, Madeline broke down into silent sobs after listening to the events that her son had experienced.
“Oh, my son! My beloved Christopher! Why are you so unfortunate?” Madeline wept in agony. When she saw Xavier kneeling before her, she couldn’t help but reach her hands out to hit him, although she had tried her best to resist the urge.
