Christopher tactfully kept quiet and gave Winnie a signal, asking her to take the call. He then turned around thoughtfully to give her privacy.
Winnie fished out the phone from her pocket and put it next to her ear.
“Hi, Xavier. I’m fine. It’s Captain Bennett, the one from the Narcotics Enforcement Department. I’ve spoken to you about him previously, remember? I have something to discuss with him now, so I’ll chat with you again later.”
Immediately, without giving Xavier a chance to respond, she ended the call.
Actually, Winnie wasn’t the one who was in a hurry to hang up. Her phone battery was low and happened to die on her at that moment.
“I’m ready, Captain Bennett.” Winnie kept her phone and called out to Christopher.
Christopher turned around, handed her the wig, and asked, “May I ask what you were doing just now?”
Winnie frowned slightly and said, “Nothing much. I was merely trying to scare her. The woman you saw just now, the one crouching on the ground, was my arch-enemy.”
“I saw she was quite badly injured. You… Did you do that to her?” Christopher frowned and asked.
“How is that possible?” Winnie gave him a wry smile and added, “I have nothing to do with those injuries. Her husband did that to her! I’m sure you know for every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction, Captain Bennett. If I hit her, I will hurt my own hand as well. I wouldn’t want to lay a hand on her and dirty my own hands!”
“I…” Christopher stared intently at her, and for a moment, he was at a loss for words. After he composed himself, he said, “Still, you shouldn’t have resorted to such sneaky acts. In the event something goes wrong, you’ll find yourself on the wrong side of the law.”
Winnie suddenly broke out into laughter upon hearing that.
She was a natural beauty, and when she laughed, no men could resist her charm. Christopher was no exception.
As she laughed, she even raised her arms and stretched out both fists right in front of Christopher’s face. “So, are you going to arrest me now, Captain Bennett?” she asked.
Christopher looked down and rested his gaze on her fair and slender wrists. He would never bear to handcuff those delicate hands of hers.
“I’m not going to arrest you. I’m just reminding you not to do such silly things in the future,” he absent-mindedly said.
“Good. Let’s talk about that when the time comes! So I can leave now, right?” Winnie swiftly retracted her hands and said.
“Where are you going?” Christopher asked.
“Home, of course.” She was in a lousy mood and wanted to head home and hibernate in her room.
“Can I give you a lift? I reckon you didn’t drive here tonight. Moreover, I don’t want you frightening the other passersby and drivers with that outfit of yours,” Christopher jokingly said.
Winnie graciously accepted his offer and said, “Thank you, Captain Bennett. Let’s go then.”
She was about to walk out of the alley when she noticed Christopher was still rooted to his spot.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, puzzled.
“My colleague called an ambulance, and he’s waiting out there. Why don’t you go the other way instead? I’ll pick you up at the other end of the alley,” he suggested.
Winnie’s mind went blank for a second, then she quickly recognized what was happening.
He didn’t want his colleagues to see him helping a “fugitive” escape.
She couldn’t help but chuckle as she teasingly asked, “Do you do this often?”
Christopher didn’t get what she meant, and for a moment, he thought she saw through him and was aware of his feelings for her.
He frowned and asked uneasily, “What do you mean? Do what often?”
“Help a suspect escape!” Winnie smiled as she added, “I heard from Lucas that you are one of the most righteous officers though.”
“Oh, you’re talking about this? You said you’re not the one who injured her, didn’t you? Anyway, I’ll go get my car, so wait for me.” Christopher smiled and scratched his head awkwardly.
He could feel his heart pounding fast as he turned to walk away. However, a couple of seconds later, he abruptly turned back, removed his jacket, and draped it over Winnie’s shoulders.
“It’s cold out here, so take this. Otherwise, you’ll catch a cold,” he said.
