Chapter 413
‘But I… I don’t want to do this anymore. The guilt weighs heavily on me, you know.
‘Fault? Do not be stupid. Do you think everyone is just like you? That kiss means nothing. Men think with their sticks, so grab this chance and don’t miss it. He’s a sight for sore eyes, so I’m sure you’d be happy to see him every day, plus he can help you.
With her comments, I was quiet. My father was talking to my mother and Mrs. Fant in the room when I got back. ‘Did you see? Lily’s dancing now was superb, and everyone was rooting for her. Callie is great too. She knows the rhythm and…’ Seeing me enter, my dad smiled at me. ‘Ah, you’re
coming back.’
‘Yes.’ I nodded and went to sit next to him.
Mrs. Fant asked, ‘Would you like some water, Lily?’
‘No.’

— Did you have fun tonight? my mother asked.
‘More or less’ I leaned back and shifted into a comfortable posture.
So my dad said, ‘I asked Dylan to give Callie a job at your company, right? Then Callie said she doesn’t want to go right now. Instead, she wants to learn
from me.’
My mother frowned, feeling surprised. However, being the mild-tempered person that she was, she didn’t object to it. Obviously, I shared her feelings. Callie was disgusting; she’d tried flirting with Dylan and Eric, but when she’d failed on both fronts, she now wanted to ask my dad for help. A graduate of a famous university? More like a graduate of Dumb’s Academy. She wouldn’t need to do that if she was really talented. ‘Did she ask for it, or did you do it?’ I scoffed.
“I invited her to work at my company, but she declined. Now she’s asking if my offer still stands.
“I thought she was going to work at Eric’s company. Why the sudden change?
‘Was she going to work with Eric?’ My father looked at me, puzzled. ‘What do you mean?’
So I told my dad about Callie’s criticism, much to his surprise. ‘Callie doesn’t seem like that kind of person. That must be a slur.’
‘Oh please, nobody has time for this. I saw it myself. Even the secretaries complained about her. Dad, please don’t keep mentioning that she graduated abroad or anything. Everyone will laugh at you. If she was really talented, she wouldn’t stoop so low to get a job.
My father soothed, while my mother smiled. “That’s not very nice of you, young lady.
‘It’s the truth though. She can do any job if she’s talented, but if she’s not, she’ll screw it up anyway. Also, Dylan and Eric’s management team are no amateurs. They got where they are because of their hard work. If everyone gets the same position right after university, companies
close in no time.’
“You’re getting excited. My mother looked at me, telling me to shut up.
‘I know the truth is true, but that’s what really happened. What matters here are her skills, not her background – not that she has any to begin with. Just stay out of her business from now on.’
“Go back to your room, Lily. Look at you, spouting nonsense. You are drunk.’ My father’s face fell as my mother dragged me upstairs.
my
I knew
my dad was upset but that was the truth. From what I saw, Callie was unreal, a slacker who wanted to have everything without making any effort for it, just like her parents. Dad might be heartbroken when he finds out about this.
In the middle of my deep sleep, my phone rang. Groggy, I grabbed it and took the call without even looking. ‘Hello…’
In the next instance, Eric’s voice came from the other end. ‘What’s with that tone of yours? You can’t be sleeping yet, can you?
