Chapter 492
‘I was on a flight, but I’m home now. Where are you people? How come no one is home?
“I’m at the hospital right now with Mrs. Fant because his father’s health deteriorated.
After getting the address of the hospital, I dropped my luggage and drove there, where I saw Dad getting an IV while Mom and Mrs. Fant watched him. Walking up and down anxiously, I asked, ‘Why has his condition deteriorated again?’
Sighing, Mom said, ‘I don’t know, but he was still fine last night. After dinner he got very sick after a phone call. It scared the daylight out of us. Fortunately, we managed to get him here in time.
‘What did the doctor say?’
‘What else but the usual; take prescriptions on time, check-ups on time, pay more attention to his diet and such’.
‘Mom, why don’t we send Dad abroad for treatment?’
‘It is useless to send him on board. There are so many people with high blood pressure and I haven’t seen anyone healed yet. This condition can only be controlled and it is best to avoid complications. Curing him completely is nearly impossible.’
His statement left me speechless and the room was momentarily silent. It was true that I had never heard of anyone cured of high blood pressure. At most, it could only be controlled by means of medication. Maybe he heard me talking, because Dad woke up and I ran to his side to ask how he was doing.
Upon seeing me, he became very agitated and his lips twitched for a few seconds before finally exclaiming: ‘Lily, my daughter!’ Grabbing my hand, his lips trembled as his eyes filled with tears, and I was shocked to see how upset he looked, as he wasn’t such a weak person from what I remembered.
As I wiped away his tears, I consoled him by saying, ‘Calm down. You need to take care of your condition, Dad. I’ll be here for you.
Without saying anything, he just grabbed my hand tightly and used so much force that it hurt. Earlier, Mom had mentioned that he had gotten sick after getting a call. I wanted to ask him who the caller was, but I knew it wasn’t appropriate to ask that now.
Finally, after Mom and I comforted him a bit, he calmed down and we helped him sit up while Mrs. Fant placed a pillow behind her back. Pouring him a glass of water, he just took a sip before setting it down on the table again.
I tentatively told them the stories of my days abroad, and he listened in silence, while Mom occasionally interrupted with a few words.
Such a scene reminded me of my university days, when the three of them would surround me and listen as I told the stories every time I returned from a trip.
Back then, I was a naive romantic while Dad was still in the best of health. However, in just five years, everything has changed.
Regardless of how sad I was, I tried my best not to show it on my face. Then the door opened and it was Callie who came to visit Dad.
“Are you back, Lily?” she asked, surprised to see me.
