He shook his head and let out a sigh. “He lied to all of you from the beginning. He used you and never took you as someone he loved. You, Gregory, and Vickie were nothing but chess pieces in his game.”
As Jeff tried to lure her on, Nell could not help but feel her heart sink. As her face turned pale, she mustered all her strength and denied the allegations, “No, stop lying to me. I won’t believe a single word that you said.”
Upon saying this, she stood up. “I’m going to find Gideon and demand for the truth!”
Barely able to walk properly, Nell’s body swayed unsteadily as she tried to make her way out. When he realized what he said had taken an effect on her, the corners of Jeff’s mouth lifted into a smirk.
“Why don’t we make a bet, Nell?”
Nell paused. Turning around, she looked at him and said, “What bet?”
“Ten years ago, you were shot because Gideon refused to trade you for the Arcane Jade. It’s understandable back then because you two were total strangers. Why would he have cared about a stranger’s life? Things have changed significantly now that you’re his wife. If he loved you, he’d do anything he can to save you. Will he make the same choice ten years later? Do you wanna bet what he will do?”
Nell was completely frozen in her tracks. She could not deny that Jeff did raise a very tempting offer. The more you care about someone, the more you want to know about that person.
Nell supposed that if another person were in her shoes, they would not be able to resist that temptation too.
She was no god. She was just a normal human being who had desires too. In this case, it was her desire to find out about the truth.
A tiny voice rose from the back of her mind, telling her to give in to that temptation. It was no secret that Jeff was desperate to obtain the Arcane Jade.
Moreover, it did not matter if she agreed to his devious bet or not. With Vickie’s life on the line, he would definitely retrieve the Arcane Jades in no time. Either way, he would get the Arcane Jade anyway. Therefore, it would not matter if she agreed to the bet, would it?
At this moment, Jeff placed a phone on the table.
“If you agree to our bet, I’ll call Gideon straight away and tell him to meet us here. By then, you can finally find out if he cares about you or not.”
Nell bit her lip and clenched her fingers hard on the edge of the table and released them again. She continued to do this numerous times as thoughts clouded her mind. She could not make up her mind.
Jeff was not in a rush. Staring at her like a predator, he waited patiently for her to give him an answer.
A while had passed before a tiny voice rose. “Okay,” she replied.
Jeff’s mouth spread into a wide grin. “I’ll call him now.”
Gideon answered the call after a few dial tones.
After Jeff notified him about their location, Gideon immediately ordered the pilot to change the course as they sailed in the said direction.
Gregory stared into the empty ocean, his eyebrows pressed into a frown. “I have a bad feeling about this,” he said.
Vickie asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Jeff went through tough measures to kidnap Nell, but he didn’t name his price on the phone just now. I know he wants to trade Nell with something, but with what? Why now, after so long? Doesn’t this seem fishy to you?”
Gideon’s face was expressionless as he stared into the bottomless ocean. He lowered his voice and said, “We still have to go no matter what he wants. We have to save Nell.”
Vickie nodded her head in agreement. “Yeah. We have to get Nelly back no matter what, and the only way to find out what he wants is for him to tell us when we meet him there.”
Gregory nodded.
Soon, they noticed a shiny object floating on the ocean upfront.
