Snapping out of her head, Jean echoed, “Yes, yes, yes. It’s that. I’m here for the scenery.”
Old Madam took a glance at her in doubt. “Oh, really? Why do I get the feeling that you’re lying?”
Jean, “...”
Jean was her biological daughter, after all. The old lady was no stranger to her character. By the look of her reaction, the old lady knew Jean was withholding the truth.
Hence, she scoffed. “Jean, did you go after Gideon’s wife?”
Holding her breath, Jean wanted to deny without second thought.
Old Madam interrupted her. “Fine, it’s fine if you don’t tell me the truth. I’ve seen Gideon’s wife anyway, she’s a nice girl. I really like her so don’t you meddle in their business or stir up trouble for them, do you hear me?”
Jean blew her top.
“Mom, how can you say such a thing? What do you mean stir up trouble? Do you know what kind of woman she is?”
“Of course I do!”
Nelly was such a kind-hearted young lady!
Not only did she have a heart of gold, she had great respect for the elderly. She had witnessed it with her own eyes over the past two days!
“Mom, why do you let her be with Gideon if you know? Don’t you know what people have been saying about her? To allow such a woman to marry into the Leith family, it is a disgrace to our family!”
“Enough!”
The old lady flew into rage. “Empty vessels make the most sound. What do I care about what people have to say? I believe what I see with my own two eyes, and you! Make haste to the capital with me. You’re not to remain here to create problems. Don’t bother thinking about coming back if you won’t leave with me!”
“Mom...”
“That’s the end of it. Let’s go!”
The old lady left with Lizzy in a huff.
Jean was hopping mad.
“Stephanie, do you think my mom is charmed by that woman? Why is mom so trusting of her?”
With downcast eyes, Stephanie clenched her fists by her sides in secret. Shortly, she smiled.
“The old madam has always believed in good so, naturally, she sees the good in people. This is normal. Aunt Leith, there’s no need to be angry over this.”
Jean rubbed her temples, soothing the headache caused by anger.
“Alright, alright. You don’t need to mollify me with your words. I know I’m nothing in Old Madam’s eyes. She’d rather be fooled by a little girl who isn’t even officially married into our family yet. What a joke!”
Stephanie softly asked, “What do we do now?”
Jean threw a glance at her.
“What is there to do? The old madam has spoken, so it’s back to the capital for me! Otherwise, I won’t be able to get past the gates to the Leiths!”
Jean took Stephanie along to the capital.
On the other end, the Jennings were in trouble yet again!
This time, it happened at midnight.
Celine had just rested her head when suddenly, she heard a woman’s cries outside the window.
The cries were whimpers, like a little animal wailing in sorrow in the dark.
Startled, she widened her eyes and turned to the window in darkness. She was a bag of nerves.
As the curtain fluttered, something lifted a corner of it. The drapes flapped in the air and outlined a woman’s features.
Moreover, those features hovered towards her, similar to a sharp black claw reaching to strangle her by the throat.
“Ahhh!”
As horrified screams broke into the night, Celine lifted the covers and made a run outside.
“What’s wrong? What happened?”
