Nell was furious.
“To bring up something like that as a joke, I can see how Miss Nolan is like as a person.”
The expression on Joanne’s face remained unchanged. She had heard those kinds of words so much that they no longer bothered her.
Her eyes continued to stare straight at Gideon.
“Young Master Leith, will you consider it?”
Nell was so angry that she wanted to claw at Joanne, but she gritted her teeth and grabbed Gideon’s arm. “Dear, I really like those earrings.”
Gideon nodded indulgently. “Alright, I’ll buy them for you.”
Joanne seemed slightly disappointed.
Gideon finally looked at her, but his eyes were cold. He then said in a low voice, “Miss Nolan, I know what you’re trying to do, but I’m sorry to say that I’m not your prey. People like you…”
He had to think for a moment before rephrasing his words. “I’m not interested in women who can be bought with money.”
Joanne’s expression shifted.
“What does Young Master Leith mean? I…”
“Enough, you don’t have to explain it. We all know what the Nolan family is like. You’ve repeatedly fought against my Second Elder Brother today, but it wasn’t for that piece of jade or the pair of earrings! You just want to get his attention because he’s on the list of people you’re trying to hook up with, right?”
Joanne’s face went stiff.
After so many years, this was the first time she encountered such a person. It was fine if he did not accept her offer, but to do so in front of so many people, he was putting her on the spot.
As if he felt he had not spoken enough, Joel added jokingly, “Little sister-in-law, don’t worry. You can rest assured that our Second Elder Brother has always been of good character. If he doesn’t like the woman, even if she takes the initiative to show up at his door, he wouldn’t want her either.”
Nell smiled and said nothing.
Joanne’s face changed for a moment, but in the end, she still maintained her stiff smile.
She said, “Second Young Master Foster really is fond of jokes. I’ll invite you to have a drink someday in the future, so please be careful with your words on these kinds of occasions. I came over on behalf of the Nolan family today to participate in the auction, not to be humiliated by you!”
Joel curled his lips, ignoring her.
With that, Joanne eventually walked back to her seat in annoyance.
The earrings were finally bought by Gideon.
Later, Joel also bought an exquisite red coral bracelet, but when asked why he bought it, he refused to say and remained mysterious.
Though Nell suddenly remembered that Lucy Katz’s birthday was in a few days, and only then did she finally understand.
However, she did not expose Joel’s intention.
After all, since he did not want to say anything, he must not want everyone to know, so Nell decided to keep her mouth shut.
After the auction, the three were about to leave when a middle-aged man came up to them.
“Young Master Leith, it’s been a while.”
The three stopped and saw a man in his thirties. He was dressed in a silver-gray suit that set off a graceful and elegant temperament, and his fair skin and gentle smile resembled the feeling of a spring breeze.
Nell’s first impression of the man was that he must have a very high status.
That was because although he had a smile on his face, his nobility and imposing aura was impossible to ignore.
Gideon nodded at him. “Mr. Shelby, long time no see. I didn’t expect to see you here in person today.”
Gale Shelby smiled. “It’s been a long time since I returned to China, so I took the opportunity to come back for a spin. I have to say, the country really has changed a lot. I don’t recognize many places anymore.”
Gideon smiled too. “The development has indeed been quite rapid in recent years. If Mr. Shelby is interested, you can stay in the country for a while longer.”
Gale nodded. “I do intend to do that. I wonder when Young Master Leith will be free? I’m afraid I will have to go to the residence to bother you again.”
“If Mr. Shelby is willing to come, we’ll naturally welcome you with open arms.”
