As the boat sailed into the sea, the ripples struck the round reflection of the setting sun, shattering it into shards of golden glimmers.
With the sunlight shining on her face and the wind caressing her body, she felt an otherworldly sense of comfort.
However, suddenly, she was taken aback by a strong force.
Her eyes widened with shock and fear, her whole body dropped like a kite without its string. With the golden sunset piercing her eyes, she could not make out anything on deck, other than a vague silhouette enveloped by the blinding gold sunlight.
“Splash!” She flopped into the ocean. As seawater started to take over all of her senses, it invaded every cavity in her body, nearly drowning her.
Out of the blue, it felt like her wrist was being grabbed.
Someone was pulling her up by her waist, forcefully dragging her out of the water.
Nell forced her eyes open as she was greeted by a familiar figure. The seawater and distorted her senses, but yet, she knew who she was looking at.
Gideon Leith! Why was it him?
She opened her mouth, trying to tell him to stop, but as soon as her mouth opened, the endless stream of seawater surged down her throat.
As the salty and bitter taste overwhelmed her tastebuds, she could barely hold back her urge to puke. There was no way she could speak in this condition.
All she could do was to grab the hand that was holding her and to frantically shake her head at this man.
NO! LEAVE ME! SAVE YOURSELF!
However, the other party did not budge,
He kept on looking at her as if reassuring her that he would never let her go no matter what.
Still holding her in his arms, he slowly swam upwards bit by bit. However, as they finally resurfaced, another huge wave came and swept them away.
The only thing she felt was a huge force knocking onto her chest, as her world was quite literally turned upside down. All she could feel was an eerily sweet taste spreading around her mouth.
On the other hand, with this second wave, she could feel the arm grabbing onto her waist suddenly loosen. In shock, Nell looked down as the man, barely visible in her eyes, was being swept away by the waves.
Dumbstruck by what had occurred, she desperately tried to reach out to grab him. However, that man had already drifted far away by the time she realized. There was no way she would be able to reach him, no matter how hard she tried.
All she could do was stare helplessly as he got swept further and further by the waves. As her vision slowly faded to black, everything fell into darkness.
“Gah!”
Nell yelped out loud as she jolted up.
She sat upright on her bed as she desperately gasped for air. She was drenched in cold sweat.
The room was extremely quiet. Other than the slight hum of the air purifier in the corner of the room and the soft snoring of the man sleeping next to her, no other sounds could be heard.
Still in fear, she closed her eyes. When she forced them open once more and reassured herself that this was reality, she could finally breathe a sigh of relief knowing that it was all just a nightmare.
Most likely due to her sudden movements, the man sleeping by her side also woke up. He reached his arm out and grabbed her waist, his gentle voice accentuating his sleepiness.
“What’s wrong? Had a bad dream?”
Nell let out a huge sigh as she replied softly, “It’s nothing.”
Gideon opened his eyes and looked at her silently in the darkness.
It felt almost as if he could sense her unease. Using his hands to prop himself up, he pulled her into his embrace.
“Don’t be scared, I’m here.”
As Nell leaned on his chest, she could not help but remember the scene that played out in her dream. For some reason, despite knowing that it was all just a nightmare, she still felt a strange sense of familiarity with that scene. It almost felt like it was her past experience.
As fear swelled up in her heart, it took control over her every emotion.
