With eyes fixated on him, Nell was sort of bought into it.
However, the thought of conversation she heard was as if something had pricked her throat, unable to be dismissed.
Her face darkened as she made a genuine remark, “Gideon Leith, I don’t know why you married me, I don’t know how long this marriage will last but I hope that if one day, you wish to end this marriage, you’ll let me know in advance. I don’t mind you falling for another woman, neither do I mind a divorce, but I take offense when it comes to betrayal, regardless as husband and wife or as business partners. Do you understand?
The man’s eyes turned dark.
He darted a cold stare at her and solemnly replied, “You don’t mind me falling for another woman?”
It was a thorn in her heart.
Nell could not make out why she had this feeling.
She and Gideon were not in love, and they were only together because of another reason. There was no cause for her to be in the way if he really found true love one day.
Hence, she nodded.
“You don’t mind a divorce?”
She nodded again.
The man scoffed out the blue.
The gentle face was replaced with a glum.
He got up and walked out.
Nell was a little taken aback.
Before she snapped out of her thoughts, Gideon came back with two red booklets.
These were their marriage registrations.
Nell’s eye was twitching, being in the dark of what this man was up to. However, her gut was telling her that it would not be to her liking.
He walked towards the front of a table and picked up a lighter. Suddenly the two red booklets were set ablaze.
Nell widened her eyes.
“Gideon Leith, what are you doing?”
She pounced to try and snatch the ignited marriage registrations.
Nevertheless, the man stopped her.
Grabbing her by the hands, he pressed her against a wall.
“Nell Jennings, I told you, I, Gideon Leith, will only have one woman and marry once in this lifetime. Did you think I was playing with you? I’ll prove to you today. Our marriage registrations are burned, so don’t you dare divorce me! From today onward, don’t even think about it!”
“...”
Nell merely made a passing comment. Was there a need for this man to take it so seriously?
The strong clutch around her wrist was aching from the strain.
She turned at the wrist with difficulty, only to find that she could not pull away from his clutches. Thus, she budged.
“Alright, alright, I’ve got it. Can you please let me go?”
Gideon still had not loosened his grip.
Keeping an eagle eye on her, he said roughly, “Then, are you still thinking about divorce?”
Nell rolled her eyes.
“Mr. Leith, you’re the one caught cheating. Who gave you the right to ask me that?”
Gideon finally broke into laughter.
Struck by a thought, he reached out to mess up her hair. He murmured, “Silly!”
Nell was speechless in confusion.
Fortunately for her, he finally released her. He explained, “She’s an important person in my life but not the kind you’re thinking of.”
Nell was in doubt.
Gideon smiled at her reaction.
“I’ll take you back to the capital after a while. You’ll know then.”
There was a quick change in expression on Nell’s face.
Back to the capital?
She opened her mouth, about to say something but held her tongue after Gideon gave her a look.
