As Lucy Katz thought about her mother’s health condition and Doctor Hayes’ words, her heart turned sour.
She could only soften her tone and plead, “Joel, whatever’s between us has nothing to do with my mother. I beg you, please don’t give her a hard time. Let her come back, okay?
“Her body’s unwell. She can’t handle any stress. Just tell me what you want. As long as it doesn’t involve my mother, I’ll agree to it.”
The woman’s voice over the phone was soft and imploring. This made Joel’s eyes darken and his expression slowly dulled.
Joel did not understand why Lucy kept hiding her true feelings and thoughts, even after he knew the truth and she no longer needed to hide anything from him. Why was she so against him?
Last time, he could say that she did not want him to find out about her horrible past, so she rejected him. Now, he already knew the truth.
She also knew that if she had just agreed to be with him, all her troubles would be solved. Why would she not agree?
What was he fighting for?
Joel knew that it was difficult for Lucy to speak out her thoughts. Moreover, he could not ask somebody to find out about her inner feelings. That was why he kept forcing her.
He only wished that she would confess her feelings for him when she had nowhere else to hide.
Joel did not believe that Lucy did not have any feelings for him. He also did not believe that she liked that Mace Smith.
That kind of man…
Ha!
Joel thought about this and laughed.
“Okay, I can let her go. Why don’t you promise me something in return as an exchange?”
Lucy nodded in agreement and replied, “Alright, say it.”
Now, she did not dare think of anything else but for her mother to return to her side. She wished that nothing would happen to her mother.
On the other end of the call, Joel knew what she was thinking and sneered, “Break up with Mace and become my woman. Whatever he promised to give you, I can too.”
The opposite side was silent as he said this.
Lucy’s whole body stiffened. She clenched her fist so tightly that her fingernails almost dug into her palm.
After a while, she hissed, “Joel, why bother? There are so many women in the world and so many of them like you. Why must you cling onto me?
“I just want a simple and peaceful life. Can’t you just let me go?”
Joel replied, “If I say that I can’t, would you agree?”
The other end of the call was silent for an extended time, then Lucy spoke in a low voice.
“Ha! Do I have any other choice?”
Joel heard this and knew she had already agreed.
He was supposed to feel elated, but after he heard her sarcastic tone, he was not happy at all.
Joel could not ignore the hatred and reluctance in Lucy’s voice.
In the end, he took a deep breath and said, “Alright. Come to St. Petersburg Hospital. Once you’re here, somebody will guide you to the ward.”
After he said this, he ended the call.
Joel stood there for a moment and stared at the bustling cityscape out the window. He thought, ‘Lu, you always want me to let you go. It’s not that I’m not willing to, but if I let you go, who’ll let me go then?’
Who would save him from the pain and unwillingness that entangled his mind all day and all night, that unforgettable hate and love?
