Lucy Katz shook her head.
“No.”
She pressed her lips together and looked embarrassed. If she had not been forced by Joel Foster, she would not have said these ruthless things to Mace Smith.
Now, she must say it.
After a while, she was finally mentally prepared and mustered up her courage.
“Mace, I’m sorry. I think we should terminate our contract.”
Mace was shocked as he did not expect Lucy to say this.
He looked at her with disbelief and asked after a long time, “Why?”
Lucy felt very guilty. After all, both of them were friends and had a contract between them. They had previously agreed on the terms.
She would act as his girlfriend and help him cope with the pressure from home, while he would help her to take care of her mother and be her financial support. She could then focus on her career without worries.
At that time, Lucy was not yet popular so her income was meager. She was also harassed by Fourth Cecil so she felt overwhelmed and could not take good care of her mother.
Fortunately, she had had Mace’s support to help her overcome that period. Now that she had a stable career and things got better, if she immediately terminated the contract, it would seem like after she was done using him, she kicked him away, which made her feel frustrated and overbearing.
However, Lucy had no other choice. She knew that if she did not obey Joel’s wishes, in the end, she would not know what Joel would do.
Mace had already helped her with so much. She did not want Joel to target Mace because of this.
The small Smith family, no matter how much strength or power they might have, could never be the Foster family’s opponent.
Lucy thought about this, took a deep breath, and said in a deep voice, “I don’t have a reason. You know my identity. I’m a public figure, an actress. Since our relationship is not real, we shouldn’t continue so as not to affect my career.”
She said this and laughed bitterly.
“You know that my career didn’t come easy. I don’t want it to be affected by any uncertain risks.”
Lucy tried her best to sound selfish, as if she did not care about Mace’s feelings.
This was the only way Mace would be disappointed in her and agree to terminate the contract.
Nevertheless, they had been friends for so long. How could he not know her personality?
He did not have to look at her eyes. When he heard this, he did not believe her.
Mace shook his head and said, “I don’t believe what you just said. What happened to you? Tell me. As long as we can solve it together, I can help you no matter what. We’ve been through so much together and survived. Why would you want to give it up now?”
Lucy looked at him and suppressed all her pity for him.
She frowned and said, “I’m sorry! I’m very grateful for what you’ve done for me. Now, I’m the one who has wronged you. We can’t continue.”
Mace did not hear a word she said and suddenly reached out and grabbed her by the shoulders. He looked pitiful and asked, “I don’t agree! Lu, why? Don’t you owe me an explanation? You can’t just tell me to come and go as you please. Aren’t we good friends? Didn’t you say that no matter what, you wouldn’t push me away? This was our agreement. How could you betray our agreement?”
Lucy was shaken by him until she felt a little dizzy. Her heart ached.
She did not want to end it this way. All these years, during her most difficult times, Mace was always there for her.
