He fell silent, and so did Vickie.
After a while, he coldly scoffed, “The story of the farmer and the snake rings true.”
Gregory softly sighed. “Perhaps.”
Vickie continued with a question, “Who are these people?”
Gregory frowned. “I’ve interrogated him, but he doesn’t know.”
A furrow formed between Vickie’s eyes.
Gregory explained, “These people contacted him through e-mail. I have gotten someone to run some checks on the IP address, but nothing came up. It must have been manipulated. He doesn’t know who these people are and only recognized the sum of cash he’s been given and the promise of a higher position.
“I guess people really want to climb their way up. It’s not strange that he would agree to it. What is a measly bodyguard here compared to being a boss lording over a territory?”
Vickie coldly smirked. “Lord over a territory? Him? It’d be weird for someone, who has questionable character and isn’t right in the head, to succeed after turning around and going against his benefactor because of an e-mail.”
Gregory had no comment.
The air between them suddenly remained still once again.
It took a while before Vickie broke the silence. “So, another dead end?”
Gregory nodded. “I guess so. Harold has a way of interrogating, but even he can’t get anything from Terrence. It’s obvious that there’s nothing much to it.”
Vickie was in a bit of a foul mood. A sense of utter powerlessness and misery crept into her mind.
How many times had this been happening?
These people had closed in and came in between them, harming her and Gregory multiple times, yet she was not even scratching the surface to get to them, let alone had an inkling of who they were.
She was overcome with a sudden irritability.
Gregory was not in the best of moods, but compared to her, he did not let the matter get to him.
With the matter having gone on for so many years, he had already sensed something amiss four years ago. The patience he had was honed during the four-year period, hence, he had no concern that the involved party could not be identified.
It was all a matter of time.
However, Gregory was not going to let Vickie know about this.
He had no way of telling her that he found out the existence of a mastermind four years ago.
Vickie did not pose the question either. After seeing him off to his room, she informed him to rest early, and then she took her leave.
The next day, Vickie was on the way to find Gregory when she caught a glimpse of Andrea in a near distance by chance. The latter was talking about something with someone dressed as a security guard.
By right, as her personal maid in the house, Andrea should have nothing to do with the perimeter security guards.
Why were they standing together?
Out of curiosity, Vickie approached them.
Noticing Vickie out of the corner of his eye, the security guard fell hush. He took one step back and addressed her in humble reverence, “Miss Thomas.”
Vickie threw him a glance.
Upon drawing near, she realized that although he was a bodyguard of the chateau, he resembled nothing like a fighter. He looked refined and gentle, clean like a scholar.
She asked Andrea with a smile. “Who is this?”
