Derek and Nicholas were also taken aback. Upon seeing the two young girls, they chuckled, "Wow, I didn't see this coming. Bumping into acquaintances. Totally worth coming tonight."
"Yeah! We didn't expect to see you guys here either."
Derek grinned and said, "We are signed artists of the Palmer Group. We're a bit late, though."
"Ah, I see! But you're not late at all. The cake slicing hasn't even started yet!"
Just as they were getting chatty, there was suddenly a ruckus on the high-society side.
Sounds of a scuffle, smashing wine glasses...
They all reflexively turned to look.
"Lyra, you're so full of yourself! Asking you to dance with me was out of respect, you ungrateful wretch!" A pudgy, not so handsome man was fuming at the woman before him.
Lyra's beautiful face bore five distinct slap marks. She said with humiliation, "I came here for Ms. Palmer's birthday party, not to dance with you."
"You celebrities, over there...since you've come here, don't try to play innocent! Your role in our high society is to entertain us!"
Lyra was humiliated but dared not retort. Other celebrities around frowned at the scene.
Scarlett seemed to be on good terms with Lyra; she quickly grabbed a bottle of wine to defuse the situation. "Oh, Atticus, don't be mad. Come on, Lyra, apologize to our Atticus with three shots."
The pudgy man didn't say a word; he just sneered at Lyra.
Lyra took a deep breath, accepted the glass, and downed three shots in quick succession, her face turning red.
"Atticus, I'm sorry. I was wrong."
"That's more like it. Since you chose to come here, you should know the rules. Come, dance with me!"
"Atticus, I'm not feeling well today."
Derek looked a bit grim, but in the end, he did nothing.
Stephanie looked at Nicholas puzzledly and said, "What's wrong? You guys know Lyra?"
Nicholas gave a bitter smile. "She's Derek's ex. They broke up a long time ago."
Even though they broke up, seeing this must still hurt.
"Um... need help? I can call Maddie."
Derek shook his head and said, "Don't worry. She’s chosen a different path from us. She’s not the same person she used to be."
If he wasn't mistaken, Lyra was probably trying to get close to someone else but got noticed by Atticus.
Nicholas quirked an eyebrow and said, "Stop stressing, bro. If it wasn't Atticus, it would be someone else. You should accept the reality sooner. It's rare for someone so young to be a top actress in showbiz; it's the path she chose. Even if it means crying, she has to keep going."
