Chapter 29 

“I’m sorry.”

Almost as if it slipped out unintentionally, those words came out of Marc’s mouth. Surprisingly, he did not feel like it was the wrong thing to say.

Pearl had cared for him for three years, and he had never really cared for her, even for a single day. Moreover, he had hurt her with another woman, so he did owe her an apology.

Hearing this unexpected apology from a man known for his bad temper and stubbornness, Pearl was momentarily taken aback.

She knew how difficult it was for Marc to apologize, and in her eyes, it was nearly impossible. She felt the likelihood of the Earth exploding seemed far greater than the possibility of him apologizing.

However, what she had secretly hoped to hear from him was not “I’m sorry,” but rather “I

love you.”

Pearl smiled inwardly at her own thoughts, maintaining her composed demeanor. She replied calmly, “I accept your apology.”

With that, she turned and got into the car.

Her demeanor today was drastically different from before, as if she genuinely had no more feelings for him, no attachment left.

It seemed like she had truly given up on him.

The assistants got into the cars, preparing to depart. Marc suddenly remembered something as the engines roared to life and hurriedly tapped on the car window,

Pearl was growing impatient, wondering why Marc had suddenly become so naggy. She hoped he would not continue to disturb her.

She rolled down the window. “Mr. Males, is there anything else?”

Marc asked, “Three years ago, why did you disguise yourself as a nurse to come take care

of me? I chose you, but you could have refused. Why did you agree?”

This question had been bothering him the most, and he genuinely wanted to know the

answer.

Pearl turned to look at him, and his expression showed that he was genuinely torn as if he cared deeply about the answer to this question.

“It doesn’t matter anymore,” she replied, her voice as cool and refreshing as the rain that trickled in through the car window. The chill spread across her face and into her heart, as she continued, “If we meet on the road again in the future, let’s just treat each other as strangers.” 

The car window closed slowly, and the three black cars gradually drove away from Marc’s

view.

Standing in the rain, holding his umbrella, Marc watched as the cars grew smaller and smaller, his heart heavy with a sense of loss. It felt as if something had disappeared from

his life.

He felt an unfamiliar pain in his heart, unlike anything he had ever experienced.

Suddenly, his shoulder felt a weight.

He turned his head to see Lucas with a brilliant smile. Lucas was still covered in rain, his hair wet, and he seemed surrounded by a mist, but his face shone brightly like the sun.

Lucas put his arm around Marc’s shoulder and teasingly asked, “Did you start missing her the moment she left?”

Marc pushed him away disdainfully, his handsome face cold. “None of your business.”

“Of course, it is my business,” Lucas retorted with a grin.

Lucas clung to Marc like a stubborn Band–Aid, continuing to tease him, “You know, they say you should never steal your best friend’s wife. But now that you and Pearl are completely. separated, she’s a free agent, and I can go after her.”

Marc stopped in his tracks, giving Lucas a sidelong glance. His icy–cold gaze was like a dagger, aimed straight at Lucas. “Are you serious?”

Lucas stood upright, dropping his playful tone and meeting Marc’s gaze seriously. “Of

course, I’m serious. What, you don’t approve? You never liked Pearl, did you?” He studied Marc’s expression and added, “Don’t tell me you’ve fallen for her right after the divorce?”

Lucas shifted his weight and glanced in the direction Pearl had left. “At first, I was worried she might still have lingering feelings for you, but judging from the situation, it seems l was wrong. Once a woman decides to sever ties, she’s way more ruthless than a man. But I like it.”
