Conner knew all too well the heartache of losing a loved one, and he understood just how much Maja meant to Annie.
After dropping Annie off at the Martin place and watching her safely go inside, he started his drive back home. On the way, he called Asher. "Hey Asher, if we happen to bump into Maja, make sure to catch her alive. No shooting."
"You've lost it, haven't you?"
"Nope, I'm good."
Asher picked up on the gravity in Conner's voice, realizing he wasn't joking, and replied, "Alright, got it. Just make sure you wrap up your date and get back soon. Don’t leave all the work to me."
Conner chuckled, "Why don't you find a date too? Maybe Annie can set you up with someone?"
"Get outta here. Not all of us are eager to tempt fate by marrying a cop, worried about being hauled in all at once."
Conner shot back, "You can be secretly jealous."
After some playful back-and-forth with no clear winner, they hung up as Conner reached home.
Meanwhile, Annie, back at her parents' place, knocked on their bedroom door. "Hey, what's up? Why are you still awake?"
She said, "Mom, Dad, let my sister know that I love Conner. If anything happens to him, I’ll be heartbroken."
Annie was stuck trying to stop the cycle of revenge. Her only hope was that Conner's love for her would spare her sister, and her love for Conner would keep her sister from harming him. She was caught in the middle, unsure of what to do.
At some undisclosed location, Maja, who had been missing for a while, was sitting on a sofa, her fingers running over her wedding ring in the gentle moonlight. Memories of Emmery flooded her mind, and the more she missed him, the more bitterness filled her eyes.
"Knock, knock, knock," came a sound at the door.
Maja lowered her hand and eyed the door cautiously, "Who's there?"
