As the wait dragged on, Conner realized relying on his godson was like betting on a long shot. So, he stepped inside, watching his cheeky little godson silently snatch a sweet treat.
Annie, completely lost in her novel, was oblivious to her surroundings. Any noise was simply dismissed as her colleagues. She flipped another page, engrossed.
It wasn’t until those tiny fingers snagged a lollipop that Easton chimed in, “Caught red-handed! Time to nab our little thief, huh?”
Startled, Annie snapped out of her reverie. “A thief?”
Turning around, she spied a chubby little figure standing there, a lollipop in hand, with a goofy, triumphant grin.
“Sweetie!” Annie exclaimed, delighted to see Henry. “How did you get here?”
“All you see is your godson, huh? Forget about his godfather?” Conner teased, feigning annoyance.
Annie finally noticed Conner and her face lit up. “Conner, you’re back? When did you get here?”
Conner hoisted his godson into his arms and mock-complained, “Henry, you didn’t do a single thing I asked. And now you’re swiping candy from your police mom.”
“Eh, let him take what he wants. What’s mine is his,” Annie chuckled, glancing at her colleagues’ amused faces. “You guys could’ve given me a heads-up or recorded it for a laugh. I missed catching our little rascal in the act.”
Around midday, Annie and Conner headed out together. On the way, Conner revealed his arrival timeline, “Got back last night, picked up the kid from Andre first thing, then came straight to you. Miss me lately?”
“Not one bit.”
Conner: “…”
Annie helped Henry unwrap his lollipop, and after a few licks, he dozed off in her arms.
Conner remarked, “Oh, forgot to mention, he was supposed to nap. I kinda interrupted that.”
