Conner: "Annie, it's an old tradition; you can't just change it."
"Who even made that rule..."
The phone rang in the living room, and Annie's attention snapped to it.
Louisa went over to answer, "Hello?"
Whatever the person said, Louisa replied, "No need."
She hung up and returned to her seat.
Annie asked, "Mom, was that not my sister?"
"No, your sister called a few days ago." Louisa unintentionally let slip that her eldest daughter was still alive.
Annie, filled with emotion, asked, "Where on earth is my sister?"
Louisa, feeling powerless with both daughters beyond her grasp, said, "Your dad and I have no idea, darling. Your sister refuses to tell us, only saying not to let..." She glanced at Conner before continuing, "Your sister still insists you shouldn’t be with the Nettleton family heir. You had me tell her you love him and if anything happened to him, you'd follow him. But she didn’t buy it and told you—"
"Annie, what are you saying?" Conner cut Louisa off, pulling Annie closer. "You love me so much you'd die for me?"
Annie, gritting her teeth, was annoyed Conner had overheard. "I was lying to my sister."
"How could it be a lie? It's the truth. I know you’d even die for me."
Annie yanked her hand away from Conner's, "You can die alone; it's got nothing to do with me. I'm not dying for anyone; don't get the wrong idea. I just didn't want my sister to make a mistake, so I lied."
"You're using a lie to hide the truth. Can you really say you don't love me?"
"I don't love you."
"I am not!"
Conner pulled out his phone, "I'm calling Asher to share the news; he didn’t believe me when I said you love me, even said you had bad taste."
He called Asher, "Hey, Asher, guess what? Annie said she loves me. She even said if anything happened to me, she'd join me. Hear that love, how great—ow, Annie, why'd you hit me?" Conner covered his eye, looking at Annie.
Asher was reviewing a map when he heard those last words. He straightened up, eyes twinkling with amusement.
A subordinate walked in, "Asher,"
Asher signaled for silence; he was eager to hear more about his friend's mishap.
Annie looked at her fist, "Sorry, I just couldn't help it."
Asher chuckled, "Got smacked by a woman, did you, brother?"
